people seem to be struggling with the plot so let me tell you everything that has happened up til now.

Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it. He took her best summer dress, put it on and went to town. Anyway the Maelle ending is the bad ending.

It’s not a judgment on the ending I’m saying you did the bad thing by immediately going to the end instead of doing the open world side content that uhhh, well, if you do it, might color your perspective a little on the characters and endings

Plus you have to at least attempt the super boss to see it’s bullshittery

the entire story is a glorified “woke up and it’s all just a dream” nonsense

I was completely enthralled until the revelation that the entire story was just some canvas painting nonsense and every character is stupid to it.

IRL mom is grief stricken and is trying to SAVE the painting for painted Verso, but Renoir is trying to pull her out to save her from herself. She has to kill the people of the painted world every year to take their Chroma to survive. Clea creates the Nevrons to kill the inhabitants and prevent the chroma from returning to mother. It’s the long game with her and Renoir trying to get mom out.

No he did it right. Doing everything else makes you way too overpowered for the final boss. He can do the extra stuff after.

You don’t need to max out level but at least finishing the character sidequests to flesh out their story before finishing the main story I feel is a much better narrative, particularly Maelle’s story

the painting was painted by irl Verso as a child and a fragment of his soul maintains it, he painted the gestals (based off dogs) and Esquie, and him and Clea and Maelle used to play in the world as kids. after he is killed by the Writers Aline-mom dives into the painting to live there in her grief, creating Painted Verso and Painted Renoir and Painted Alicia and the people of Lumiere in a facsimile of Paris to while away her grief.

this is chill for a min until irl Renoir crashes into the painting and Fractures the world, trying to expel Aline from the painting and destroy it / everything / everyone in it so she can't return and drug cope anymore. they are fighting for decades and Renoir creates the nevrons, with an assist from sister Clea, to capture all the chroma of which the painting is composed. Aline tries desperately to maintain the painting but cannot, and the countdown is Aline warning the citizens of Lumiere of Renoir destroying more and more of the painting/chroma each year.

Painted Verso goes against his painted family to get his mother-creator out of the painting, and later because his existence is misery and he simply wants to die / free the soul fragment of irl Verso / not see irl Alicia consumed by the painting. Maelle-Alicia wants refuge in it because her waking life is pain and disability and alienation and the painted people she's lived with are as real and important to her as any. the writer has said many time there is no good or bad ending it's all French and sad.

The revelation of the entire world you’re playing in being some kind of artistic playground is ridiculous. Can Aline and Renoir not just get out of the canvas? All we get is some throwaway line about how “intoxicating” it can be to stay in the canvas world.

Why did it take 60 something years of expeditions before a Maelle-Alicia copy showed up? Why was that even special to begin with?

If Clea doesn’t care about the battle between Maman and Papa why should I? Who are the Writers? What the hell was the arson fire that killed Verso and disfigured Maelle about?

Sciel’s husband and child? Lune’s dumb OCD besides her parents?

What the fuck was even the point of Lumeire getting gommaged annually? Other than some stupid “warning” about how Maman’s power was waning. Was that really it?

Holy shit the ending and everything about act three just seems like a lazy cop out. Oops watch out! Expedition 32 is out killing everything too! Cuz reasons.

I’ve gone back and rewatched every cutscene halfway through after act two. Absolutely nothing is there to insinuate I missed something. It’s legit just “lol this world is fake anyways.”
