Louis Belanger, director of communications for Canadian International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, said the $50 million is part of $400 million in aid previously announced during the G7 Summit in Charlevoix near Quebec City, in June.

Belanger said the decision to announce the $50 million was made three weeks ago, but officials had been talking about giving to Education Cannot Wait for months.

He said the organization operates in Jordan, Lebanon and South Sudan, and in camps where people have been displaced by the west African terrorist group Boko Haram, for example.

"We think it's important for girls to continue their education and that's why we're moving forward," he said.

Trudeau's principal secretary, Gerald Butts, took to Twitter to defend the move.

"This money is going to educate women and girls in the developing world, in commemoration of Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday," he tweeted

i mean to large governments 50 million isn't very much. not only that, investing in education worldwide tends to pay back dividends. a more educated populuce is going to be less violent, wealthier, and maybe you'll get lucky and one will go on to be the next einstein or marie curie, benefiting the entire world.

it's not like canada's gotta worry about a giant military budget anyways. no one wants to invade you and the worst terrorists you gotta deal with are the occasional horny moose. :D

My stance is less on the platform and more on the content, big difference between talking about making a donation vs talking about How much you hate a certain news network because they disagree with you lol. And for the record, yes I think that more money should go to our veterans, but I also don't feel like we should drop what makes Canada what it is as well, as a nation we've always been inclusive and reached out a helping hand to our neighbours to help when needed, which is why I call it a joke to claim that you want to "Conserve" canadian traditions while complaining about us offering help to our neighbours. Now I don't claim to be an expert on finances or anything like that, but I always felt like if our taxes aren't enough to pay for things that need to be paid for then maybe taxes should go up a bit? I dunno, might be a crazy idea to help get more money for things like social security etc.
