I mean they're literally a parasite on an already bloated system.

It would reduce overhead, but the real savings would come from tossing out their too-high compensation for services rendered and instead cramming medical providers down to Medicare rates across the board.

This. Nobody wants lower payments (it would absolutely kill any doctor practicing today in terms of fee collections but give them more autonomy and time with the patient) but insurance companies literally are a parasite.

They exist for one reason - to make money unless you're sick - and when you are sick, they have people (who aren't your doctor) help decide whether or not you should have your procedure covered so that they can make money.

A lot of primary providers are leaning towards subscription-based medicine, which would largely work better if drugs weren't so painfully expensive, and it really is affordable when you consider you could still make like $300,000 a year seeing only 500 patients for like $50/month. All your primary visits are covered, all of your preventive screenings are covered, and I think the only hang-up is medication or surgery.

Medical care is ridiculously cheap. The reason it soars so dramatically is because doctors are essentially being turned into drones. Go into work. See however many patients they tell you to and in the you're ordered to so that you can maximize profit/quality per patient. It's kind of sad.

Actually, in some ways, it's depressing. I see first-responder, veteran, nurse, and mom parking spots/discounts everywhere but doctors are constantly shit on. I've seen residents who haven't slept more than 2 hours in days. Attendings are practically never "off".

Just gonna say there are pet medical insurance options out there. Though, my take is that unless you've willfully taken in an ailing animal that will otherwise live a fair amount of time, it's better to eat the occasional spike costs of a vet bill than it is to pay monthly. It was something we considered when we found out our second dog had a form of genetic mange we were conveniently not made aware of when we got her, and as a result is more prone to various ailments and was deemed incapable of safely breeding. Doesn't help our third dog is a food aggressive asshole that occasionally uses her as a chew toy, either, which doesn't help with her fur (re)growth at times.

Yes I absolutely think so. Not only would we see savings once the insurance companies go away but we would also see savings because of all the incidental costs caused by insurance companies. Think about how many people exist and get paid JUST to deal with the insurance companies and decode complicated shit for people.

Either that or health insurance should be conducted strictly on a non profit basis with a cap on compensation. Or we move towards a more robust HSA system or a hybrid of both.

    Hybrid incentives work best imo.

But yea, the insurance industry is bloated as fuck and is about as useless as Susan G. Komen.

    Any thoughts on this article?

(I really don't know anything about the "balanced fluid" alternative beyond what it says)

Just about everything we use is crystalloid, but in cases where electrolyte balance is needed and other factors are at play saline only instead of balanced is still widely used. If used correctly, there probably isn't any real danger (I could ask my attending tomorrow).

It's probably a matter of patient per patient. Critically ill ones will probably and should get, balanced.

I more or less brought it up due to how commonly saline is used.

I mean, some antibiotics work far better than others but there's reasons we don't just throw them at people.

Kentucky's governor just canceled the vision and dental benefits for a half million Kentucky residents.

Reading the comments here and scratching my head-

why are you having children if you cannot afford to even have the kid to begin with? Are they all too ignorant to understand how their insurance works? is getting a hospital bill a surprise? do you think everyone, regardless of their ability to financially provide for a family, should be able to have as many kids as they want?

Did you not read the related article or are you actually chastising these people for having a child with a serious developmental disability and being unable to afford the associated health care costs.
