nobody said a single blood test and I'm sure you're leaving some details out about a $6000 panel

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

    No he's not.

Idk about today, but four years ago, they gave a basic tests for $250 for Down Syndrome. Everything else was extremely overpriced.

Accept the fact you don't know wtf you are talking about.

    That was our experience.

The Maternit21 test is like $500 and screens for a bunch of genetic disorders including the one that baby has (but wasn't available then) It's called a "cell free DNA" test (on the pregnant mother's blood). Insurance often covers it completely for moms with risk factors or over 35.

Y'all did good enough proving him wrong. I'm tempted to post my story from working in a tox lab as another anecdote of why shit in medicine is broken but it's long and not mobile friendly.

$500 for a comprehensive test is a (reasonable) far cry from a $6000 single panel so I'm not sure who you think archie is proving wrong here.

why the fuck everything cost money tho

I dont know what options were available to this lady a whopping 6 or 7 years ago, but I am able to find literature on prenatal discovery of that specific issue more than 8 years ago. I agree being poor is hell and maybe they werent able to afford screening. Maybe the exposure from their tragedy will get them a gofundme and they wont have to worry about it. Doesnt change the fact I think they're irresponsible for having children they cant afford.

For everyone else- I dont think an extra $500 is unreasonable to avoid an unnecessary emotional and financial burden like this

I think $500 to know whether your child will be born healthy is pretty expensive in America today. And that's just the $500 test that doesn't test for everything those more expensive panels do. And those most expensive panels don't cover everything to begin with.

Sometimes you just hit the genetic lottery and get something you can't really prepare for. Nevermind how ludicrous it is to expect every parent to abort their fetus if an abnormality is discovered. Not everyone in America is willing to do that.

Like, do ppl think medicine has come so far that any and all dibiliting disabilities can be screened for and prevented/aborted? Sometime shit just happens or the testing isn't available to look for the issue. As a society do we just say "well, you're unlucky. Good luck young family"? Cause I think we can do better than that.

I mean, we have decent money and didn't do the MaterniT21 test, just the downs screening and a number of ultrasounds looking for fucked up shit. Sometimes you roll the dice on not getting 1/100,000 genetic defects that survive to birth (most bad defects just result in miscarriage obviously).

Womens bodies have a way of shutting that all down.

The conversation is a bunch of people telling two lab people how much a test costs and what it is when they already fucking know while simultaneously attempting to diminish the cost of a test that said people know nothing about and claiming a conversational win.

Go look up Natera microdeletions panel (PANorama) then please come back and tell me more about this fascinating thing called trisomy 21 (which is neither the chromosome nor the disease we were talking about).

Full panel testing can easily exceed $4000-5000 and y'all are hung up on ONE ASSAY.

A thread full of people saying it cost them $200 if your insurance denies it. What a nice company

Every time you post something I'm more and more worried you might be responsible for some part of my healthcare

I'm just fugging with you tbh but it seems like having a baby is a lot more reasonable than i originally thought
