Just want to provide a little insight into why hospitals did this. Yes, it's for money. But it's also to stay afloat. Surgery and procedures are a hospitals bread and butter for making money. What does not make money are inpatient stays, overnight stays. You may think it does because the bill for a 3 night hospital stay is quite costly, but by the time CMS rips some off the top or line items are negotiated or declined by insurance, you pay hospitalists, nurses, nurse assistants, managers, lab techs, housekeeping, transport, equipment, etc....inpatient stays do not make money.

Surgery centers skip the losses of inpatient stays and go right to making bank. If hospitals lose out to the often cheaper surgery centers, it's going to harm the hospitals ability to pay staff, purchase modern equipment, etc. So, while it is shitty, it's also a pretty valid reason for hospitals to fight it.

Also in many cases if a patient is readmitted to a hospital within 30 days of discharge with similar complaints, even if it wasn't the treatment team's fault, they almost never end up having to pay for it as a "new admission" regardless of the work done, which means good news for a patient's pocketbook but not the hospital's.

And that's whether it's the provider's fault or not.
