This is again why anti-science rhetoric is so dangerous. Did you know ibuprofen can kill your kidneys? The incidence of that is dose dependent and not impressively high.

Water can fucking kill your kidneys too.
I don't understand the argument that glp-1 agonist have no long-term side effects because plenty of common medicines/foods have long-term side effects.

Generally, I bet on homeostasis triumphing over strange diets. However, it is a bit silly to claim that obviously this drug is totally fine because ??? Advil can kill your liver ??? You could claim that it is pretty safe based on the number of people taking it and the lack of well supported lawsuits, but I would recommend waiting and seeing. We're very much doing this one live, so we'll find out in five years what the long-term use side effects are.

Advil mostly hurts hearing, btw. You were probably thinking of Aspirin or maybe Tylenol for liver damage.

Y'all are talking past each other. When people say "side effects" they mean that crazy shit they say real fast at the end of medicine commercials like "may cause hallucinations, hemmoraging of the ears, stage 7 cancer, and death".

Tummy grumbles while you acclimate to new medicine is a side effect, but definitely not what people mean when they ask about side effects. They want to know about long term, debilitating side effects that you endure cause the alternative is a terrible disease, of which there are no known horrendous side effects to the glp-1 family of drugs.

All the entire list of things that glp1s could possibly cause, none of them are worse than being morbidly obese. It's an easy trade.

Being 300, 400, 500 lbs is going to kill you anyway. So, no hesitation.

Yeah, the health benefits of losing significant weight, including visceral fat around your organs, and significantly reducing or eliminating type 2 diabetes are so immense it's hard for anything to "get worse" in that environment.

But for the "we'll just have to wait and see..." crowd - it's been FDA approved for type-2 diabetes for nearly 8 years now. If we aren't seeing serious side effects amongst that very unhealthy population 8 years on, I don't know what we're still waiting for.

One of the best cases to say, "You voted for this!" that I have seen so far.

No. I wasn't. NSAIDs that work on COX1 and COX2 especially are known to cause problems with kidneys. Even Aspirin can cause kidney issues.

And no, I also wasn't saying that it's inappropriate to explore side effects. It's more that it's inappropriate to catastrophize them when clinical trials go through phase IV analysis all the time. This happens to be a situation where it feels more like correlation and not causation.

The antivax wet dream is coming true. People are refusing to give their pets rabies vaccines out of fear it might give them autism and no I am not making that up.

I remember listening to them screech during COVID that they're not antivax, they're just skeptical of this vaccine.

Saw this coming from a mile away.

Lot of headlines the past few years about US life expectancy decreasing amidst the pandemic and surge in murders and overdose deaths.

Not so many headlines about how that trend has completely reversed and in 2025 we're at the highest life expectancy in our country's history.

The Wall Street journal is reporting what RFK Jr is putting in his autism report. He is reporting that Tylenol could be a cause and folic acid deficiency could be a cause. Neither is a novel idea. It's been reported and studied before.

So now I'm going to get a little deep in the weeds about some research that I'd done. This should be a spotlight on why the public should not do their own research. My wife works for a chemo infusion center, so she works with oncologists. One of the other nurses that she works with also has a kid with autism, and she was talking about a study she had seen about leukovorin, also known as folinic acid and commonly used alongside some chemo meds to help with symptoms, could be helpful for specifically speech delays in autism. My wife asked the oncologist about it, but he had never heard of it for autism. I went online trying to look up the studies and I found most of the studies had the same author and researcher. So then I researched the specific author of most of these studies and found out where he worked and what type of center it was and if it was some type of hokey bullshit. Even after that, I texted a doctor friend who I knew was working at the hospital that night and had him get on our database subscriptions and look into it there. I literally spent days to see if this specific treatment was bullshit, days. After talking to quite a few people and talking to our pediatrician, our pediatrician, who also had never heard of it, said that he would give us a referral if we could find someone that does it. But I know that aspect of it seems legitimate.

Anyway, me, with a master's degree in a healthcare field and almost 15 years of experience in the field, did all of that research for one specific treatment for one specific symptom. Imagine the type of rigorous research the people like rfk are doing.

Yep. Not in the medical field, but also graduate degree.

If I'm understanding you right, best summed up as "people don't know how to read / interpret research studies" yeah?

It's exhausting. And sometimes it's even worse when it's someone with a little bit of a background, but not enough to properly interpret it spouting off dumb things.

But they can read the abstract!

Just ask people about study designs. At best, you'll get *double blind" and not RCT, Cross Sectional, systematic review, etc. they believe they're qualified enough to critically analyze a study without even understanding study designs. Incredible brains.

i had a follow up appointment at kaiser w/ my surgeon today. when i was done, we saw that they had started the flu shot drive. i go in to get this shit knocked out, tell them i'm an employee and ask about the covid shot. the nurse rolls her eyes and tells me she doesn't know if they'll get any covid shots this year. she said it varies from day to day. yesterday they were told they'd probably get them; this morning they had an email that said they almost certainly weren't.

neither of us had much constructive to say about it.

but that's where we are folks. not even healthcare workers, who face unavoidable exposure (some of us doubly so b/c our coworkers are antivaxers), are going to have difficulties getting this shot.
