I'm on the fence with microtransactions cause adults should be able to spend their money how they want on a vidya, and there are a plethora of parental controls to keep kids from going overboard. I feel like this problem would be a non problem if parents actually did parenting in the 21st century.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I think severity has a lot to do with it.

How many magic card users stopped feeding their children in order to buy more magic cards? If they did, I don't think we'd argue that they'd need psychological help.

In the article the guy says he thinks it's less than 1% of the population. I think they are just going after those extreme cases. Not like, people who cancel dinner because they don't want to miss the raid.

So it's a small percent. but by the same token, we've known about those cases for at least ten years now.

I went back to FFXI over and over again through the years, even after times when I would quit for 6 months, a year, even 2 years. All those times something about the game specifically brought me back, like an expansion or other friends returning. XIV I quit once and never went back to even though I think on the whole I enjoyed it just as much in the time that I played.

That said when I AM playing those kinds of games, it's not hard at all for me to block everything else out and lose whole days to the game.

There was not enough time to get a degree -and- focus on my black mage, so I focused on BLM. Two years later, I returned to classes and finished the scenic route through college.

At my worst, I no-showed an entire finals week.

I was never THAT bad. Though I do wonder what my GPA would've been in college if not for XI, and law school if not for XIV. And also XI. There was some overlap in law school.

But honestly if not them I would have found some other way to distract myself.

I never ditched work or school, but I’ve had to break night countless times because of fucking king pop windows at 2-3am or some other dumb shit lol.

Never missed work or anything like that while I was into XI. I did sort of disconnect from friends. However, I learned who my actual friends were because the real ones would still reach out to me to hang out while the ones where it seemed like I always called them to do stuff never called and we never talked again.

And I agree about XIV. Bought it and played for the free month. Never bothered after that. Have went back to XI multiple times. I can easily get lost for hours/days in Fallout games and did for awhile with Skyrim. With all the mods and community created content there is always so much to do.

I've downloaded the patches for XI & XIV multiple times during past comeback campaigns, but never took the time to get back into them. I feel like I am too far displaced from the current climate (nor do I feel like purchasing the XIV expansions to catch up). I did have a bit of an addiction to XI where I had dropped out of college, fell out with a lot of my friends, & even missed work all to focus on endgame activities. Can't really go back to that life.

    haha oh man, fucking QuickShot

Yeah, we definitely tried to match the near-24-hour presence of the dominant JP HNM LS. Their leader was always so salty when NAs made progress I think it amped up the dopamine hit.

The reality of gaming is when you're busy with real shit and real friends (outside of ones you are gaming with) it's difficult to play games.

Create an environment where kids don't have to rely on this shit for entertainment and it wouldn't be as profound a problem.

I feel like the issue is parenting.

Truly. If my mom kicked my ass out the house from time to time to get off ffxi I'd probably be better off for it lol.

I was an hour late to a three hour Calc final because I was camping Fafnir (alone too before I was even in a full fledged HNM at the time; I was just stupidly hoping I could claim it and give it to a shell with people who I knew in exchange for getting to lot the Heca Cap if it dropped) Bombed it entirely, but scraped by with a C in the class because I had an A up to that point. My only C in undergrad.

I figured out later that it would have bumped my final GPA up by .2 or something like that and probably would have gotten me better money offers in law school and prolly would have been enough to get me into Berkeley law (I got cut in the final round).

Yoshi P. killed XI and shit on its corpse during my 1L year but I don't think my gaming, or the resulting depression, affected my law school grades at all. My best grade in law school was a class I showed up exactly twice for: the first day, when the professor said attendance was not taken, and the last day for the pre-final review. Comparatively there was another law school class where my professor was giving a lecture/presentation at a conference in Cancun. I was there as part of a scholarship and I was the only student in his class there. His final was on the subject of his lecture. I said the exact same stuff that he did in his presentation and he still rolled me a C+. Those two experiences solidified for me the fact that classes and what the professor says is irrelevant, just go to the library and look at the high scoring sample exams for the professor and put that stuff into your outline.

Humans are supposedly hard-wired never to be satisfied long-term, even when achieving a life goal, because that would be an evolutionary dead end. But no subsequent achievement has rivaled the accomplishment I felt from getting my N. Legs. If it weren't for Yoshi P., I do think I could have ridden that contentment to a very different place in life.

I moreso meant that I wouldn't have gotten into public policy and politics to try and replicate the bitterness, anger, and competition of Dragon's Aery.

Nothing has come close to my time in xi, suicide it is.
