i haven't even played pokemon in like a decade. i can remember maybe the names of most of the first 250 or so, but only if i saw a picture of them first. i certainly couldn't assign them to their proper numbers. i can remember some of the story of those games though, which i'd say is a more important thing to remember than whether arcanine is pokemon #30 or #54 or whatever. if i ever needed to know the exact # for some reason, i'd just check the pokedex, just like i'd check Wikipedia or something before quoting the exact # of jews that died in the holocaust to someone because i hate getting numbers wrong and i wouldn't trust my memory to recall it.
