This, pretty much. I live in China. I asked my coworkers about the holocaust yesterday. They all knew it existed, but none of them had any clue of the scale of it. The highest guess among 5 workers I asked was 300,000. I asked why she guessed this number. She told me "It couldn't have been worse than the Nanjing massacre"

It's really, really hard to make a case for the Nazis or the Imperialist Japanese being worse than the other. Nanjing was 300,000 (yeah, Chinese sources, but there's enough evidence to put it there), in 6 weeks. That's on par with the Holocaust on a week-for-week basis, and Japan was basically engaging in that scale throughout China, Korea, and the Philippines-- and note, that's purely civilian murders, not military deaths. Add in the literally hundreds of thousands of women forced into sex slavery, and the numbers get impossible to really take in. Up to 14,000,000 civilians murdered, and that's not including normal civilian collateral damage. China has tended to break each incident into individual occurrences, in part because Manchuria, Nanjing, Korea, the Philippines, etc... all have such long, hateful relations to each other. The Nazis were, excepting Nanjing, more efficient about their murder. The Japanese were far more creative and brutal about it.
