I stopped saying "retard" about four years ago now because I realized the connotation was much more negative than I thought to someone that mattered to me. If you want to keep saying retard, say it away but keep in mind that someone is probably reading it and thinking about a loved one that will never be able to live independently.

I feel like there has been a huge social shift in this area. I, admittedly, used to say it, too because it was such a "gamer thing" to say. And I feel like when I used to game a decade ago I saw/heard that word non-stop. So like you, thought nothing of it. Then I smartened up maybe 5-6 years ago. I mean, I grew up around kids with special needs because my mom was a special ed teacher. So why would I say something so hurtful to those who can't defend themselves? But it's very different now. I rarely rarely see/hear it now. And if I hear it, it's usually from some kid. About a year? (maybe half a year) ago when I went back to wow I was in an lfr and someone said it, I was rather shocked as to how many randos got on the dude saying it was a sick word to say.

Because it's not like there are SCOTUS cases that turn on the Justices deciding which definitions of words to use and have rejected dictionary definitions. It's not like lawmakers and regulators write their own definitions for clarity sake.

Except, this is what the dictionary actually says:

"the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship (historically and in some jurisdictions specifically a union between a man and a woman)."


The problem with your arguments is you constantly want to put what you theoretically imagine things to be vs. what they actually are. Yet somehow believe your imaginary theories to be logic and reason.

I think this attitude/actions is more important that word usage. We as a society often even without words put this idea or assumption out. Much more than retard does. And a not small portion of it is seemingly well intentioned but is effectively benevolent bigotry.

Not sure it still exists (probably a bunch now or bigger) but there was a non profit actually really close to where my dad worked when I was little that basically was a how to adult for people with physical and mental handicaps. Teach them how to take care of themselves and interact with society with said disabilities and would get hire them out for labor and find jobs for them. Almost all of them loved it because most of them had treated separate from society as someone you had to take care of and watch what you say around while most of them just wanted to be treated like anyone else and wanted to join in just needed some help. Most ended up being some of having the best work ethnic I've seen once given a chance. Fun fact the strongest guy by far on our track team was handicapped and I'd see him make jokes about it's his retard strength
