The reason why this is insufferable isn't because preference for gender neutral language is bad, it's because the notion of gendered language (in English) is a laughable misconception from people who don't understand etymology.

"Human" and "mankind" don't have "man" in it because we thought only men were important. It's because of the etymological roots for those words (which are separate from the words that gave us "man" and "woman.")

Same thing applies to "his" vs. "her" and "history", "son" vs "daughter" in "person", and every other example people throw out regarding this.
