That could be one explanation. I'm sure the weapon made him way stronger, it was just weird to not be able to see him do any of his powered up abilities until he got it.
I interpreted it that Thor didn’t need a weapon necessarily, but his confidence was so shaken that he couldn’t focus enough to do it until after his pep talk with his mom and validation from Mjollnir that he was still worthy.
I figured it was more of an amplification. Thor was barely able to take on Hulk in Ragnarok and Thanos made both of them his little bitch, so he needed something to amplify his powers to give him a shot at beating Thanos.
I figured it was more like giving him a literal and figurative edge against Thanos but the more likely explanation is retcon.
Also Thor remarked that even with his power unlocked he wasn't able to stop Hela.
nah yeah Tyrath is right, the entire character arc of Thor in Ragnarok is him recognizing his power and his heroism were inside him all along and not dependent on external trappings, Odin explicitly chides him 'are you the God of hammers' and Thor is more powerful without Mjolnir than with it. it had become a crutch, an inhibitor of his powers as he relied on it more and more. nearly identical thing happens at the end of Iron Man 3 with Tony destroying all his automated suits then the next time we see him in Ultron he's made a mess of automated suits. it is what it is, Taika Waititi's and Shane Black's ideas for their characters and their arcs didn't always line up with what Joss Whedon or the Russo Bros had in mind. p much inevitable when you have different creative teams working on the same product and give them leeway to execute their visions (which is a very good thing Marvel has done just resulted in some inconsistencies).
