Which makes me wonder, outside of rape, if people think the accused should bow out of the public life and go die in a ditch, or admit it and the reasons for why they learned their lessons and move on with their lives?

Obviously there's no one answer. There are a lot of elements that factor in to what the appropriate response is.

Was there a pattern of abusive behavior?
Did the abuser have a position of authority over his victims?
Were the victims very much younger than the abuser, or even legal minors?

If the answer to any of those is "yes," then yeah, you can go fuck off forever unless there's jail time involved, in which case serve that and then fuck off. If the answer to all is "no" then maybe there can be redemption.
