I don't get why we can't care about rehab and punishment. It's all fine and dandy if you hypothetically get better but that doesn't annul you of your responsibility and consequences of your actions.

My personal argument is not this at all, since rehab and punishment are not mutually exclusive. My argument usually constitutes of defining responsibility and consequence. Punishment without rehabilitation means nothing outside of the death penalty (which I don't support in any situation). Ignoring crimes caused by socio-economic crimes and survival, a competent person knows crime results in punishment, that does not deter people from either taking or not caring about the risk of getting caught for said crime. A person with a compulsion on the other hand does not necessarily have the wherewithal to always avoid the crime. Should they be punished? Fucking right, if for nothing else than preventing a dangerous precedent for the competent to escape their crimes. Once again however you still have to buckle down on rehabilitation for them.
Crime and punishment is a very complicated subject because humans are fucking complicated.

Oh I wasn't referring to you just some of the others that seem to be on the 1 or the other thing. I'd argue that at least for mentally sound people compulsions are still avoidable though. We're humans I believe we all have desires for things that would be nice for us but not so much for others. Hence why society has always been somewhat about getting along for the good of the group with some form of encouragement to that effect whether it be actual laws and punishment or just general societal standards/morals. It's why those with the power to ignore some of the encourage are more likely to act against it. Punishment obviously wont stop everyone no matter how extreme you get but for things society cares about and take seriously it can deter a lot
