It was just clearly a movie written by a non-American about American police and race relations without doing the actual work to learn how things are here. It was beautifully shot and had some strong performances though, but the script was just...off.

yeah there's a p basic failure in reading comprehension in people labeling her a hypocrite on account of that Tweet. she's telling people who have worked with known predators what to do, how to make amends for protecting the Weinsteins of the world for decades, it's not really a #believeallwomen thing.

just think you're fundamentally misunderstanding McDonagh's aesthetic if you think it was a movie primarily about movements or ideology or social issues. he is intensely character-focused writer, and while race relations and police brutality are dealt with they are done so more as the backdrop for the deuteragonist's characterization and arc than as a blanket statement trying to make a larger sociological point. i know the prevailing trend in popular art is to make stories that are about something 'bigger', using the movement of the characters as symbol, but McDonagh's story is focused on the individual, on the rage of grief, on redemption, and despite the braying of socially conscious reviewers i never got the impression he was trying to pontificate.

Oh I get it, I just found the "backdrop" to be horribly distracting and foreign. It was a mistake to set this story (which isn't a necessarily American story by any means) in a setting McDonagh doesn't understand.

It wasn't attempting to tell a slice of American life. You uproot the characters to a different country or class and the takeaway is exactly the same. A bunch of people shitty or otherwise getting by and dealing with things they have no idea how to deal with. Even the ending was "yeah lets go do this, wait, now that we've slept on it, this is beyond our lives." The backdrop was there to provide a catalyst/tipping point for all the bullshit they had all just sucked up. It's okay if you didn't like it though, not everything will resonate with everyone every time.

#MeToo spearheader just got #MeToo'd. She paid off her accuser, Jimmy Bannett, who claims that she sexually assaulted him when he was 17. In an interview he claims that their relationship took off in a "mother-son fashion" when they worked together on a movie when he was seven, so there may even me a ton of grooming involved also.

Asia is now saying that it never happened and that Bennett was trying to hit her up for cash for damages in the tune of $3.5 million. She claims it was Bourdain's idea to pay him off so that his name wouldn't get dragged thru the mud by association.

Supposedly TMZ has text messages between Bourdain and Asia where he mentions paying him off to get rid of him. She basically admits to having sex with the 17 year old in the text messages but then tries to play it off like she let it happen because it was some fantasy he had for the longest time.

How was I whiteknighting? I asked questions in my previous post. I've been on team innocent until proven guilty since the beginning.
