Rian Johnson has confirmed that the "I've got a bad feeling about this." line was delivered near the beginning by BB-8. That's what Poe was answering to when he responded with "Happy beeps!"
I don't think I've gone so far as to say it was an awful movie, I just didn't think it was good and considering how fucking long it was I'll probably never want to watch it again.
Compared to other stuff I watched this year like Dark Tower or Valerian, yeah it was "ok." But at the end of the day I'd probably put it about on par with Justice League, for a lot of the same reasons (attempts at humor and shitty pacing/writing, with positives of generally decent acting and cool visuals)
I feel like I am late to the party here and it's only Sunday.
Anyway, I fanboyed the fuck out of every Luke scene and I loved them to pieces. Could I have come up with a dozen bad ass moments for him to just go wreck shit? Yeah. I would have loved to see it too but alas that time in his life was over. If I had to nitpick it would be the dusting off of his shoulder from the massive blaster attack and his final 'see you around' words to Kylo. Still minor offenses imo. I can't decide if I give a fuck about EP9 or not, but if he comes back as a force ghost then I'm all in.
The rest of the movie was well, a SW movie. I enjoyed it for what it was. Some dumb stuff, but welcome to all of SW. As long as this is "made for kids", and it has been since Lucas saw it was profitable, hardcore fans are always going to be disappointed I think.
I don't know if Luke was going to be returning in Ep IX originally, but with Carrie Fisher's death I think he will have to return as a Force ghost to help train Rey. I could be entirely off base but I'm sure Leia's display of force powers in this was to help show the audience that she herself had gained a great deal of mastery over the Force and would serve as a capable trainer for Rey in Ep IX. Now obviously that can't happen anymore, so I'm supposing we haven't seen the last of Luke.
I really wonder when people throw out the "JJ would have been so much better" stuff. Like, when did you folks last see episode 7? Practically every complaint from 8 fits 7 as well. Forced humor at inappropriate times, sections with mediocre acting, terrible plot decisions, long time fan favorites dying because reasons.
This shit is par for the fucking course for Star Wars movies. Not just 7, but the hallowed OT as well. Have people forgotten every goddamn Ewok scene in RotJ?
No one in this thread is saying that 8's gonna sweep the Oscars this year. They're saying, "Hey, for a Star Wars movie, it was pretty good."
While it's not quite as bad as arguing the merits of the various Fast/Furious movies, it's really not that much better.
The prequels were not bad at all, I don't understand the slander. ROTS is top a 3 star wars movie. And despite there flaws at least they had some outstanding light saber battles. The Darth maul fight alone shits on anything I have seen in the newer movies.
all I wanna know is
how come when I type “light speed collision/crash” into google I get zero results from the movie
cman that’s all I want to see again
sorry I brought that up before but it reminds me of playing xwing/xwing vs tie fighter and accidentally hyperdriving into shit (or being hyperdrived into) and going AH SHIT
It's about consistency. Set up Rey to train with Luke? Let's see actual training. I understand a rough life on Jakku can get you thru a fight or two, but against the Supreme Leader's elite guard? Nah. Set up Snoke to be a formidable foe? Give the guy SOME kind of backstory & show him completing Kylo's training. Kill Han Solo? Anoint Kylo as "Darth-whatever". Dude killed his father, he's pretty much a full Sith Lord. Set up Knights of Ren in flashbacks? Show them, or give them more than a passing mention at least.
All of the above could've been included in the movie, and still have Kylo kill Snoke. He just would've been more formidable of a foe, but he's still the same emotional basket case he was in ep 7. Could've omitted the casino scenes and put all of this in. If the director didn't know what to do with Finn, just have him in a coma until ep 9. Wouldn't have needed Rose at all. But yeah, it feels like Johnson didn't like much of anything that JJ set up and just did his own thing. Now you have JJ coming back to a mess that he has to write around to make ep 9 work.
Plot twists are always welcome, but changing up just about every plot point that was set up? Like I said, you still could have had Kylo kill Snoke off, but give him some development & training from Snoke to make us look forward to the final showdown with him. I feel like there's no hype about the final confrontation going in to this next movie with Kylo as he is now.
...if a girl who was from a place Luke called "ok that's pretty much nowhere" knew about the rebellion heroes then Snoke (who is definitely not Sidius wtf?) who took the reigns of the former Empire would definitely know about the Empire.
And speaking of crazy fan theories, I'm glad the "leaked plot" of Rey being Anakin reincarnated didn't turn out to be true.
That's just cheap.
...anyway. Just heard apparently Andy Serkis was quoted as saying the inspiration for Snoke's wardrobe was Hugh Heffner. fucking lol
Enjoyed the movie. Obviously it was not perfect, but some of the complaints confuse me. Like, everyone is saying it had too much forced humor, like MCU levels of jokes in the movie ruining every serious scene. Aside from the beginning call from Poe to Hux, I don't really remember any.
I loved Luke. I loved when he explained what really happened with Ben, I loved his scene with Yoda where they talked like old friends. I wish we got more. I didn't notice he used parts of the X-wing on the huts on the island, so I kept expecting a scene where he force lifted the X-wing out of the water. I was sad that he didn't actually show up and get to have a real lightsaber battle, but the projection was still cool as fuck. And as annoying as it was that he died anyway, it had to happen. He died, still looking off to the horizon, seeing his two sons, and disappeared just like Obiwan. He had to die this movie, so we could see him and all the force ghosts hanging out next movie.
I liked Finn, but agree that his entire plotline was pointless. Rose was bleh, but her sister went out like a goddamn boss, even though those bomber ships are the worst designed thing I've ever seen lol. Was annoyed by Del toro's character, not the acting or his actions or anything, but the way he talked was fucking dumb.
Poe was great, not his fault that noone told him the plan. I like that they're showing why he's going to be in charge of the resistance next movie.
RIP Ackbar.
Leia's scene was awful. She died. And I was fucking shocked by it. Kylo couldn't pull the trigger. She says her last words and then gets sucked out into space. I hit hard, and it fucking worked. Then she wakes up in space and flies back? Come the fuck on. It would have been a great exit for her. Only thing good about her coming back was that we got one last scene with her and Luke. Bets on how long Hamill cried in the theater the first time he watched that scene?
Kylo and Rey were both great. I enjoy their relationship and her trying to understand him. Slightly disappointed that she just became greater light side and he became greater dark side, instead of Grey Rey or both of them swapping sides or something, but its fine. They had the best teamwork during their royal guard fight, in any Star Wars movie ever, and it was enjoyable as fuck to watch. Though, we didn't really get a true lightsaber battle this movie, did we?
Overall though, I really enjoyed the movie. It was fun. I was interested in what was happening, and I'm excited to see what happens next. My main complaint with the trilogy is that Im more confused than ever about the First order and resistance and republic. Somehow the republic is in shambles now? They only blew up one solar system in the entire galaxy. We saw how big and diverse the senate was in the prequels. This is like, if DC was nuked, the rest of America would just give up in a day and not one person would join the fight. Meanwhile the first order just lost a base the size of a planet and what had to be a majority of their soldiers, and they just dust that shit off and keep going? I still don't know why the resistance was down to 400? people either. Idk, the whole thing is weird and confusing, and now I'm left waiting another 2 years for any kind of clarification that I know is never going to come.
