Swap AoTC and TPM and I'll have to agree with you. At least AoTC furthered the story of the universe a bit and led into The Clone Wars series, which is the best Star Wars media imo. TPM was completely throwaway as a story.

When I first saw this movie, I walked out unable to rate it. It had a lot of great moments -- great Star Wars moments -- but much of it is also ranged from ill conceived, to bad, to awful.

It didn't take me long to start disliking it more and more. Rian Johnson's irreverent disregard for the first movie and its worldbuilding, in what is supposed to be a coherent trilogy, is perplexing. I don't envy JJ's task in Episode IX.

Nothing from TFA is utilized in a meaningful way in TLJ. He swept the elaborately set up board clean. By the end of TFA, I was invested in the characters and intrigued by the worldbuilding. By the end of TLJ, I'm not interested in anyone or anything.

What is there to be excited about? Kylo Ren and Rey are both still novices. The Rebellion and the First Order's implausibly small fleets are both decimated. Every interesting character is dead (Luke, Leia, Snoke, Phasma). General Hux went from a Hitler-esque figure to a bumbling fool falling for a prank call.

Subversion can be fantastic, but that's not what was done here. If Rian Johnson wanted to be subversive, he could have had Rey and Kylo swap alignments, or shirk the polarization of Snoke/Luke and become grey. If he wanted to up the ante, he could have had Finn succeed in sacrificing himself. Instead, he unceremoniously killed Snoke, whose very appearance and powers were crafted to imply an interesting background, and discarded concepts like the Knights of Ren.

Movie felt like a poorly conceptualized Battlestar Galactica episode.

    Spoiler: show
but the praetorian guard fight was brutal and awesome

Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy. Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?

By the way, let's talk about Leia:

Understanding that Star Wars is Space Fantasy that doesn't care about physics, I enjoyed the scene introducing her force powers... but only in a hypothetical world where Carrie Fisher is still alive, where that can be expounded on in the next movie.

With her passing, and their insistence against a CGI recreation, I'm baffled that they didn't re-edit that scene to be her true death. Or even have her pass from her comatose state. Especially since Luke's death could also have been easily edited out, and Leia's role going forward assumed instead by Luke.

Feels like they dropped the ball hard, considering they're now forced to give Leia an off-screen death.

THIS THIS THIS. THIS is exactly how I felt leaving the movie and I honestly have no interest in IX. Leaving VII, I was fucking STOKED for VIII.

They could have done it the same and just had Admiral Ackbar take Leia's place instead but it would involve MASSIVE reshoots (the movie was well finished shooting when Carrie passed) and robbed us of that final Luke/Leia scene which, as much shit as I give this movie, was really cathartic after Fisher's death.

    My rankings would be:

    1. The Clone Wars series
    2. R1
    3. ESB
    4. TFA
    5. ANH
    6. RotS/RotJ
    7. TLJ
    8. Darth Maul fight
    9. Dooku fight

Probably unpopular haha. TLJ has the potential to go up if IX is miraculously great and shows Johnson/JJ worked on an actually cogent narrative, but I'm pretty sure Johnson just royally fucked JJ.

I somehow really doubt any major story changes were allowed without JJ's approval.

Rian Johnson confirms there will be several deleted scenes in the Blu-ray release. What can you expect?
    Spoiler: show

Extra training scenes with Rey and Luke
A few scenes with the Ach Too caretakers
More scenes with Poe getting Finn up to speed after Finn wakes from his coma
More scenes with Finn, Rose, and DJ sneaking on board The Supremacy
*not sure if he was joking* A scene where Finn, in Imperial Officer uniform aboard The Supremacy, is confronted by a Stormtrooper who unknowingly congratulates FN-2187 on getting promoted

He was shown the screenplay after it was written, but he had no input. Rian Johnson was given complete creative control. As far as we've been made aware, there is no overarching vision for this trilogy, and they've been winging it each movie.

JJ directed and co-wrote the first one with a couple other people. Johnson directed and wrote this one. That's why it was a controversy when they fired Colin Trevorrow from IX.

Walked out of the theater going "eh", but after sleeping on it I was standing in the shower thinking more and more on how good this actually was. From start to finish they put so much thought into everything with this plot that it all just comes together in the end so amazingly. I can see why some people would complain, this is definitely a very different Star Wars movie, but by god I'm willing to say it's one of the best; it's definitely the best character development at the very least.

Biggest complaint I can probably call out are the/you nerds crying over how Luke died. What a fucking way though, confronting his apprentice and saying his goodbyes. In the end it really put a nice bow on the whole plot and passing things on to the next generation. They even gave my man a tatooine-like sunset after he fucking astral projected across the galaxy. I'm glad he didn't actually get off the planet or fight Ben; he put himself into exile for failing his pupil and it wouldn't have fit imo that he all of a sudden is now out to stop his own pupil considering everything he went on about in regards to the Force and the balance of the universe. Yoda kinda hamfisted it for the plebs, but it's Yoda and the scene was done marvelously.

Honestly, the first hour and a half I just had no idea where this was all going, but that final hour or so really just brought it all together. I'm so glad I went in with the open mind and just watched it for what they were trying to do.

I thought it was a testament to how powerful Luke was. He was able to send himself across the Galaxy just using the Force alone, and was able to project himself fighting, touching, etc.

    That's not a small thing.

Also I thought each character's development was great, except Laura Dern who was ultimately pointless to the plot and should have been replaced with Leia or Admiral Ackbar.
