How can anyone describe TLJ as world-building lmao!? It literally killed off several sub-plots and left the over-arching story with absolutely no direction for the next film. As some have said, it felt like Johnson had some kind of bone to pick with JJ and wanting to absolutely destroy anything that was setup in the TFA.

It's world building in the sense that it's trying to knock away the old order of the skywalker dynasty and the jedi knights and instead it's attempting to create a new dynamic in the star wars series were the force isn't about blood ties or jedis or siths. I think this is probably the game plan and where they intend to take future installments in the series.

Considering how much star wars fans covet their skywalkers, jedis and siths, the anger from some people about this movie shouldn't be surprising.

They announced they're doing a DBS movie that's going to "explain" the origins of Saiyans and their SSJ transformations, so it won't be just drunk ramblings anymore lol. That said, movies were never canon (besides the super ones), so there's that at least.

TLJ was character building, not really world building although the casino scenes were good for that. They set up a threat outside of Sith Lord and Apprentice duo #357 and setup the scene with the force kid. It was maybe a little long but I can overlook that.

Also, I don't keep up with the comics, but I wonder if Snoke, how Phasma escaped, & maybe more of Kylo/Rey's training story lines were reserved for those? I don't put it past Disney to set those aside for merchandise purposes.

If you're talking about how Phasma escaped Starkiller base, that was covered in a four(?) issue series. They made her out to be this crazy badass which we never get to see in the movies.

TLJ was basically a scrambled version of Empire imo.

- Resistance Base under attack/Hoth invasion
- Chase of the remains of Resistance fleet/Asteroid persuit
- Bespin visit+interrogation+attempted capture of Luke/Casino sequence+Snoke's interrogation of Rey and attempt to convert her
- Paternity revelation/Rey's parents revealed to be nobodies
- Dagobah training/Ach-To training

Only the end and some new revelations about how the Force works have added anything new to the lore. Spirit Ghosts can manipulate physical world around them? I guess it makes sense if you remember the graces from The Clone Wars when Yoda went to get training.

Also, in true "spirit" of Star Warcest... how Freudian can you get having a giant penis cannon trying to bust down the vagian looking cave where your mommy is hiding?

There is a difference.

I would love to see more non-skywalker / non-jedi star wars; the books did an amazing job at this, so no reason movies cant either.

The issue is that you can not do that with the main trilogy. The main story is the skywalker story, and I think the real reason that people are pissed with this movie is because it messes with that. This is why I am very happy they are hopefully done with the main story after 9 and going to a new trilogy / storyline which means hopefully they will be exploring something new. The more time they spend in this storyline, the more it hurts the original trilogy.

Id find it boring if by the 9th movie were still watching a story about a conflicted Skywalker doing the same Skywalker things. Doubly so if the series ended with Luke finishing off the baddy just like the good ol days.

I sincerly feel that any Skywalker story will just circle around to Vader and quite honestly I'm ready to move on from that central part of the story. This movie does that. People talk about world building but want the same people populating that world. A new set of characters, all with flaws but still relatable, with all the story to explore coming from them. Even a new Jedi unencumbered by two previous trilogies, free to be explored however they want because they don't have to harken back to Vader and Skywalker bloodlines.

The way the plot is going he won't be around forever unless they lie about this being a contained trilogy and give him kids or something. And this movie wasn't all focused on the conflicts of this skywalker, and the next one will probably be even less so.

Good thing they ended this with random plebs getting force powers to fill the ranks of characters to develop and explore.

If you want a war story reminiscent of Dunkirk in that it's plot driven rather than character driven, you'll probably love R1.

If you want a Star Wars story that's more character driven, like the OT/new trilogy, well.. it's quite different.

R1's darker tone and the dark-ish TLJ trailers made me hope TLJ would be more interesting than it was. Alas...
