The entire Flynn story had no point and accomplished nothing aside being forced to give Flynn a majority of the screen time. For a movie that felt long, and that you would figure would be cramming in plot progression, it felt more like 1/2 of it was pure filler. Wasn’t impressed by a lot of the movie aside Luke’s awesome force projecting at the end (but then his death scene fell flat to me because before I realized he was dieing I kept thinking there had to be some dark omen regarding the clouds he kept looking at as they filled the sky

Well this was just great. It had the light sabers with the rnnnn vruuunnnn kcchhhwww and the spaceships with the pew pew pewew and moved the story forward in big ways. Plus cutesie toy stuff and classic characters. Better than Rogue One, in any case.

Mark was initially just as caught up in the "Legend of Luke" as everyone else.

By the way, JJ had the chance to read the script in pre-production and he loved it- so the argument that the movie somehow shits on his vision is also flawed. I also recall that Lucas's original plan was also to feature a self-exiled Luke, so that wasn't exclusively a JJ or RJ idea.

As someone has repeatedly pointed out in this thread, self-exile is kind of what Jedi do. There's a precedent. Hamill saying "no way would Luke do this" seems like wishful thinking when set in contrast to the way these things are pictured to usually go. On top of that, again with the Buddhist parallel, a lot of Buddhists (at least in Japan) would, near the end of their lives, shave their heads and take vows and go live someplace completely remote in self-imposed exile, often even if they'd never done anything bad to warrant exile. It was just a popular way of choosing to live the remainder of one's life, contemplating the higher mysteries and enjoying the gifts of the natural world. So I guess I don't see it as out of the ordinary for a Jedi at all, especially one who fucked up super bad and served as the impetus of Kylo's turn.
