Movie was solid. Thought they did a good job transitioning from the old characters to the new generation. I think Rey and Kylo Ren had really good character interaction through out this movie via ForceTime as people are calling it. Their scenes were easily the best. I won't be surprised if the next movie does more to set them up as the key antagonist and protagonist for a new generation of Star Wars stories rather then end it. There will be a new trilogy after this all about them I am 100% certain.

I'm still on the fence. I mean I enjoyed it, I just don't know if I enjoyed it as a main line star wars film. Probably my biggest gripe is it seemed like they recruited M Night Shyamalan due to all the random twists.

Wha? This was basically an updated Empire Strikes Back without being a 1-for-1 remake like Force Awakens was for New Hope.

I'll read through this thread later but I finally saw it this afternoon and damn, this was a really great movie.

I'm happy for you and anyone else that liked it and I did enjoy certain parts. Objectively I think it is a mediocre film with hits and misses, whose greatest flaw is sheer bloat.

Pick the key themes and plot points that are the strongest (anything with Kylo, Kylo/Ren interplay, ship battles and EXPLOSIONS) and cut the rest

I have no serious issue with the casino planet plot in a vacuum but it has no place in the story. Del Toro is wasted. Laura Dern is wasted.

More than anything I think it's my disappointment with how amazing the film could've been were it not held back by the big misses.

You also have to consider how poorly the film holds up to closer viewing and analysis. My reaction leaving the theater was "Eh..." but now it's "holy shit there was some piss poor writing"

For the record, I have no issue with how Luke was handled. Don't use him as a straw man for why all the nerds HATED the film. I can't think of anything Star Wars lore-related that negatively affected my opinion. Maybe the way Rey is all-powerful without having to "earn" it, but I consider that a writing problem.

Is that not a low bar? Aren't there enough talented writers out there to make it a good film on its own? Maybe the answer is no based on big corporate Disney involvement. Hard to say.

I'm irked Relena Peacecraft (aka. Mon Mothma) went DERP DERP Military Disarmament Act in the books. We're left with space battles that don't feel so epic and the stupid "They're very slowly getting away but not really" situation for the Raddus. I was expecting the First Order to send in faster frigates and fighter groups to mop up the Resistance, but they don't exist in the First Order navy since I guess they only need hulking Star Destroyers said no admiral ever.

Considering Kylo's miniscule squadron of himself and two TIE fighters was able to somehow destroy both the Rebel Cruiser's main hangar (with all their fighters) and its bridge (with their highest leadership) in the span of 30 seconds, because I guess neither has any form of protection, you'd think they'd have been able to systematically destroy the fleet with just their TIE fighters in minutes.

But, you know, instead the star destroyers inexplicably can't cover the TIEs anymore, so they have to fall back indefinitely, and/or cease to exist.

The plot was super dumb. I've been going back and forth on whether I liked Laura Dern's (admittedly beautiful and awesome) suicide move. Doesn't make much sense that we've never seen something like this before if it's possible, and also we've seen Hera in SW: Rebels FTL through a star destroyer's hangar before with no ill effects, so I'm skeptical.

The fact that apparently the Luke-Kylo flashback plot was taken straight from Rian Johnson's one other film, Looper, is hilarious and shows his lack of creativity/range.

Theater had to post signs telling customers the sound stops for ten secs during the light speed kamikaze scene due to customer complaints. Everyone at my showing knew the silence in that scene was deliberate & well timed, but apparently stupid people gonna stupid.

Same. Would have been really annoying if idiots had ruined it at my theater.

Watched it a second time a couple days ago and didn't hear anything about that. The star destroyers are already firing on the cruiser as Kylo's squad is deployed, IIRC.
