Lower barriers to entry are always bad. Change my mind.

The barriers might not be relevant to what is experienced later on, and are preventing capable people from advancing because of irrelevant metrics excluding them before hand.

    Idk, I'm just talking shit.

"So just play other games!" as we tacitly observe that these problems are gradually creeping into more and more games alongside the pending streaming rights nightmare. Sorry some of us are looking ahead of the curve, but I can pretty much look at every mobile game those of us play here, as an example, and propose a few tweaks that would still leave it quite playable, but at the same time, not at all predatory. And that's part of the problem some of us are further trying to point out. Fun is being compromised for profit. I don't give a fuck about leaderboards. I do give a fuck when I can't play a game when I want to because energy ran out, daily attempts have been spent, something is only open a certain time of day, I didn't pull the right characters, content is only temporary, etc.. It's a distinctly different beast than the "git gud" assertion people may make if they can't clear a particular piece of content in a more traditional game. And once more, this isn't about censoring content or the true meat of gameplay. It's more than protecting kids or those prone to addiction. It's not wanting to see a collaborative, interactive art form ruined by the worst aspects of capitalism. And yes, with this being a gaming forum, I would like to believe most could understand that.

Nah, fam. Congress doesn't need to protect your art form just because businesses found out it's more profitable to appeal to millennial millionaires in Dubai willing to shell out all the dirham for drawings of anime titties on their cell phones than it is to cater to broke-ass American gamers who buy everything on Steam sales.

I dont get the crying because every game cant be an experience like red dead 2 or God of War. Not every game is made for people like yall, yet you keep playing games like it. Just fucking stop and play something that isn't p2w. Most games, especially console games, are not p2w.

Acting like these developers are forcing you to install their shitty castle game where the icon is the ingame character yelling like they're charging into battle.

Contextually here I'm saying that the paywall barrier was a superior model to the new microtransaction environment where companies offload the costs from one a large (?) single paywall entry-point to multiple "smaller" pieces.

In the worst world, you get shit like EA. Not only do they sell the base game, but they flood the actual game with micro-transactions to further pad their revenue. Then the things that are locked behind micro-transactions are actual content, like characters, classes, or finishing the game through the release of paid "DLC."

The best possible result are when the microtransactions are cosmetics where some other people buying hats allows users to have a free game. But even in this world the influence of the micro-economy is insidious. Since the profit is derived not from the game, but the cosmetics, quality of life is only a concern insofar as it affects hats. Developers will instead push content that boosts micro-transactions rather than content for the game. Yes the game must obviously care about quality insofar that it must remain good enough for people to want to play it, but there is going to be lost focus on improved gameplay, balance, etc. when the revenue stream comes from a different part of the game. Valve's stewardship of Dota 2 is a prime example of this.

And also keep in mind that Pandora's box affects the industry as a whole not just particular companies and their games. Kingdoms of Amalur was a great game and well-reviewed by most critics, but it bankrupted 38 studios. I've heard that those associated with the company have said that publishing the game traditionally without microtransactions (free to play or not) was a mistake that doomed them.

Would love to play more RPGs, but it sure does seem like they're being stripped down for mobile or MMO shenanigans hoping to hit that next cash cow. But maybe that's just me.

Like this problem isn't just lootboxes, and it isn't just mobile games. Microtransaction monetization has infiltrated gaming on every level. Every EA title, all the Ubisoft titles, Valve titles, Overwatch, LoL's champion sale model, any game that now releases with DLC? These are all branches of the same poisonous tree.

I'm not claiming I know how to fix it, or if it could be fixed, but the point is that we took the fork in the road to a darker path for gaming. End stop.

EA just announced in their investors call that future non-sports/battlefield-like titles will be released like indies are in an early access model.

Like that's not really a barrier to entry as much as it is restrictions based on whether or not you won the genetic lottery at birth.

I mean you could argue that abstracted to a sufficient degree everything comes down to the genetic lottery, but nah bruh you reachin'

there's been a golden renaissance of RPGs in the last few years, Divinity Original Sin 2, Pillars of Eternity 1+2, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun series, Tyranny, Persona 5, Torment, Undertale.

honestly for all the crying about the state of gaming it's rarely if ever been better. there are some loathsome business practices to be sure but the quality of releases has never been higher and even microtransactions and early access and the games as a service model have produced absolute gems. do Kerbal Space Program and Dead Cells and Stardew Valley get made without the capital early access purchases granted them mid-development? have there ever been strategy games as continuously refined as Paradox's, who maintain that continuous development with yearly DLC? Dota 2 and Overwatch and Smite and League of Legends get developer support long beyond what competitive games of yesteryear would have received because of the purchase of cosmetics, etc etc etc.

You've just described what marketing is in literally every business sector.

Next you're going to want legislation that makes it illegal to put out chocolate bars by cashiers because it's been tested and proven that people buy impulse items when forced to sit in a cash line.
Or shit, liquidation and "everything must go" sales are illegal in your eyes.

How many of them have gameplay changing microtransactions?
