I think the real problem is the ridiculous price of some microtransactions in freemium games.

Basically Final Fantasy Grandmasters (That FFXI mobile spinoff) giving you a chance at a fucking Mandau for dropping $$ on a banner.

Lotta these games are skirting laws anyway by making you buy their funbucks anyway.

    Brood War.

Dota 2 and Overwatch and Smite and League of Legends get developer support long beyond what competitive games of yesteryear would have received because of the purchase of cosmetics, etc etc etc.
DotA ran for a good seven years with absolutely no support as a WC3 mod, and my post addresses how the quality of that support is lacking compared to the time/effort Valve puts into things that sell hats better (of course you have to measure that against Valve's culture in general as a baseline which does not reward things like improving QOL but instead prioritizes big feature design)

HoN had much better support... until it went free to play. Then everything became about maximal monetization through gouging early access heroes.

Like we have a model to sustain continuous development. It's called subscription fees.

you've clearly never played a Paradox game if you think that statement is accurate

and DotA 1 ran as a mod that saw 0 development beyond balance changes and the occasional introduction of a new hero/item. you can whinge that Valve doesn't spend enough time on gameplay enhancement (though the game enhancement they've engaged in is qualitatively far vaster than anything IceFrog managed on his own) because they focus on creating the cosmetic content that subsidizes said development, but, come now.

imagine favoring mandatory subscription fees over optional cosmetic DLC to sustain a MOBA's development

Or like how they used XI's sub to build XIV at the expense of XI. It's why I'm so big on post-launch revenue reinvestment, personally.

XI's subs kept Squareenix on life support during the crystal engine era.

Brood war did not introduce new units over time. The only development post launch was fixing bugs and balance updates.

What is there to develop besides balance (inclusive of new heroes and items)? The game needs nothing besides that and quality of life adjustments (regional filters for matchmaking, matchmaking formula adjustment, countermeasures to illegitimate account services [boosting, sold accounts, etc.]).

But Valve offers almost no QOL fixes except when there is a shitstorm on Reddit (and the fact it has to be on Reddit and not the official development forums shows that they only do it because of PR). Normal development is completely oriented towards selling hats or tournament tie-in compendium/passes.

Again, HoN was the best AoS clone when it was pay walled before the S2 store. Development was focused only on the balance of the game,

Also the way the game is balanced has gone downhill since ~TI2 with more and more focus on making it more accessible and a more exciting spectator sport. Every pro will tell you that the way DotA is played now is less and less about the "best" team winning. The pacing and mechanics like fort refreshes and comeback gold make it much easier for underdogs to pull off upsets. It's too hard for the better team to transition early game dominance into capturing objectives and a bad team can hang around for an extra 15 minutes and hope to capitalize on late game chaos (see OG winning TI8 by spamming Spectre). But these days that randomness makes it more exciting for casuals, and maximizing views and capturing the interest of the LCD matter more than the purity of the game as a competition.

I'd rather pay $15-20 a month for Dota 2 and have the game be focused on the game rather than Valve spending all its time developing quests and shit that end up just ruining my pubs by people trying to do stupid fucking quests for stupid fucking hats.

Just like Abyssea, content and monetization models that prioritize the casual gamer are toxic and harmful.
