Colin Angle, the inventor of Roomba, has unveiled a new robot called the Familiar, an early prototype that offers a sort of robot pet with the intention of providing emotional interaction inside a cute, fluffy, weird sheep-looking design.
This adorable companion isn’t like his previous vacuums, which won’t apologize when they tread more mud into your carpets in an attempt to clean them up. Instead, it’ll be specifically trained to be emotionally intelligent, interpreting tone of voice, body language, and mood to act instead of any commands.
The Familiar will focus on the way the human responds, recognizing and identifying people, and adjusting its behavior based on who it is interacting with, with the aim of completing jobs that require a little more trust.
Familiar Machines plans to market its products to people who want to monitor their loved ones, such as an aging parent or other dependent adult living alone.
