Not if you agree to it in order to use their product! Then it is just good business!

Yep, you aren't forced to use Discord at all.

People aren't forced to use Windows, Zoom, or Google products, but to the extent they tried to become ubiquitous. Is to the point of, or near to being, essential digital infrastructure.

Discord's in that similar bubble as Twitter, Twitch, et al in that there really aren't any viable alternatives. Pragmatically, we should all know by now that anything you post, upload, or share on the net is always subject to someone else seeing and saving it. People suddenly being surprised that maybe nazi pedo behavior could later bite them in the ass is just them being naive morons since Discord also has a history of cooperating with law enforcement when approached. The folks thinking they could pirate stream things to their buddies in private channels are just being stupid, too.

To this day, I'll still remain baffled that Discord still doesn't have features that even AIM did in the 90's, or that their UI could use some serious work. In that sense, it's like how Reddit is worse than forum software it eventually replaced in the mainstream.

Stanislav wasn't a great XI player, or anything, so it tracks.

Some of the nation’s largest tax-prep companies have spent years sharing Americans’ sensitive financial data with tech titans including Meta and Google in a potential violation of federal law — data that in some cases was misused for targeted advertising, according to a seven-month congressional investigation.

The report highlights what legal experts described to CNN as a “five-alarm fire” for taxpayer privacy that could lead to government and private lawsuits, criminal penalties or perhaps even a “mortal blow” for some industry giants involved in the probe including TaxSlayer, H&R Block and TaxAct.

Using visitor tracking technology embedded on their websites, the three tax-prep companies allegedly sent tens of millions of Americans’ personal information to the tech industry without consent or appropriate disclosures, according to the congressional report reviewed by CNN.

Beyond ordinary personal data such as people’s names, phone numbers and email addresses, the list of information shared also included taxpayer data — details about people’s filing status, adjusted gross income, the size of their tax refunds and even information about the buttons and text fields they clicked on while filling out their tax forms, which could reveal what tax breaks they may have claimed or which government programs they use, according to the report.

I wish I were shocked. Also won't be at all shocked when no one is punished in any meaningful way.

wouldn’t that also include any mobile carriers equipment, as well as internet providers? so legit there’d be no way to send any sort of message to anyone without it being recorded for the government?

Recorded and interpretable are different, but the short answer is yes in theory. I doubt they would be able to execute it or would bother doing it anywhere but the telcos that they are probably already integrated with anyway.

Stop Using Your Face or Thumb to Unlock Your Phone
Last week, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in California released a ruling that concluded state highway police were acting lawfully when they forcibly unlocked a suspect’s phone using their fingerprint. You probably didn’t hear about it. The case didn’t get a lot of coverage, especially because the courts weren’t giving a blanket green light for every cop to shove your thumb to your screen during an arrest. But it’s another toll of the warning bell that reminds you to not trust biometrics to keep your phone’s sensitive info private. In many cases, especially if you think you might interact with the police (at a protest, for example), you should seriously consider turning off biometrics on your phone entirely.

An advisory from California AG Rob Bonta: People who used 23andMe services should probably delete their genetic data, destroy their test samples, and revoke permissions to use genetic data. 23andMe declared bankruptcy and it's a big unknown what could be done with that level of data.

A handful of companies that have replaced their customer service with AI are now facing an issue with AI making new policies when there isn't data available to provide an answer to troubleshooting. One such company, Cursor, has been forced to issue refunds, but their response to the issue is to now warn customers that it might be AI responding to their inquiry and it may not be answering the question correctly.
