Isn't that not even particularly effective for a nuclear weapon fallout? It only binds to a particular type of radiation and the fallout from a nuke has many different isotopes in it from what I remember.

I mean if you are lucky/unlucky enough to survive the initial blast.

Thyroid cancer is the most pressing medium-term effect of radiation exposure. If you don't get acute radiation poisoning, protecting your thyroid from gobbling up radioactive potassium (by flooding it with regular potassium in the first few days of fallout) really helps survival.
