Polygraphs are a very real thing in many states.

When I worked SVU, polygraphs were pretty integral for shitty agents who sucked at interrogating lol. Polygraphers would go out their way to obtain a confession without the test just because of the stigma in court. They’re essentially the best of the best when it comes to subject interviews. The amount of stupid shit I’ve seen people lie to in a polygraph to make them fail is mind-blowing. The science behind it is pretty amazing and legit, unfortunately it gets a bad rap because the average American is a tribal retard who’s lost the ability for independent thought.

Polygraph testing is highly sensitive to anxiety associated with lying, but not very specific. A pathological liar or sociopath with a flat affect could probably trick one without realizing it, and a casually anxious person could turn up positive without knowing it.
