I dated a waitress/bartender for awhile and got a look into that world. I tip 20% minimum at the Pancake House now, absolute floor of tipping. Greater service = greater $$.

Department of Labor floating a regulation that would allow employers to take tips from their employees.
I've seen a lot of shit from this administration but this is up there on the shittiest list.

However, five days ago a class action lawsuit has been filed. "Plaintiffs say this is unfair because the servers make a lower minimum wage than that earned by back-of-house staff members. They say Maru’s policy forces servers who are paid the state’s tipped minimum wage — $3.52 an hour — to share the 10 percent service fee with employees who are paid at least the non-tipped Michigan minimum wage, which is $9.25."

I agree with the lawsuit. If you're not paid the tipped wages you shouldn't be making tips, period. If you're not making tips you shouldn't be paid the tipped wage. When I was a server I had no problem splitting tips with staff that earned a tipped wage, but if they're considered a non tipped employee then get fucked. Of course on the really big tables or parties I would buy the line staff a beer at the end of the night or something, but that's a far cry from what they're proposing.

Line chefs are not paid terribly (per hour) as compared to wait staff; the people pushing for this are absolutely trying to garnish tips to subsidize back of house wages with the savings going right into their pockets.

I'm going to lump this in here because it's of a similar vein, but Bank of America announced yesterday that if you have a checking account with a low balance they're going to start charging you for it. New tax law, making that economy strong.

I saw people making hay about this yesterday.

It's weird, because I thought it has always been a thing? When Fleet was bought out by Bank of America, they axed all free checking accounts for college students while I was in undergrad. I will swear the $1,500 thing also immediately took effect.

I remember Fleet, they had my very first bank account. I've had free checking for awhile now, but I've also always met these listed criteria.

Most banks waive the fee if you have direct deposit. Also credit unions.

I think if you have a minimum account checking into it every month you avoid the fee too.

For Chase, having direct deposit of 500+ a month waives this same type of fee. Or never going under a balance of 1500.

If they weren't getting enough tips to make up the difference you effectively already were. After this you will be even if they did. Which kind of takes away what should've been the point of the tipped min wage. The whole recognition that you could make much more. Of course the real reason is the shell game of hiding real cost of business by having the customer directly pay employees wages.

Wonder how this will work out in all the states/cities that don't have separate tipped min wages. Already feels kind of dumb to have pseudo required tipping there but if you know 100% of it goes straight to the employer I'm not even sure I'd want to tip for good service outside of places that you know that's likely because of managements standards.

I assumed they'd been doing this for awhile. I know they did this with savings a long time ago. Back when I was like idk 12 or so I had a savings account with them. Didn't exactly have a job or get an allowance or get cash for holidays but saved up everything I could find and spent tons of time rolling coins and had about $120 in there. Then they changed their policy to charge $7 a month if you had less than $200 I think. Being a kid I obviously wasn't really able to check my balance often so wasn't till the 2nd or 3rd time I caught it. Went in and was like wtf closing account now. They told me they could work something out so wouldn't charge me but wouldn't give me back the money and wouldn't promise they wouldn't do it again sometime but really wanted me to stay lol.

I guess now is a good of time to ask. With a baby around the corner, what’s something I should set up for him/her that they’d get when they turn 18? Like a trust fund or something.

you could go 529 for college savings

If you want your kid to have cash I'd suggest permanent life insurance policy that switches to their name when they turn 18. Payments will be cheap AF and if they don't want to keep it they can just cash out the inside build up.
