50/50, those numbers mean the same thing. I don't think I've ever seen +100

On the other hand, I think he's making too much money off the presidency (and has too much power) to not want to hold onto it for as long as he possibly can. Especially because the presidency is the best shield he has to stay out of jail at this point.

Honestly I have every confidence in Democrats to screw up the midterms and end up worse off than before.

Every time I start to feel hopeful about midterms I think about that Intercept piece about how the DCCC is backing candidates and the "rolodex test" and experience a renewed sense of dread.

I have zero faith in the dems to win anything major in the midterms. I feel like there is a huge disconnect between the democrats in charge and their base which will cause a low turnout.

    This board is fascinating sometimes.

I'm pretty convinced at this point there will be a blue wave, considering republicans did the exact dumb things that would hurt them (net neutrality repeal, incredibly unpopular tax reform), and some things even I didn't see coming (embracing of nazis).

It won't be substantial, and if you think it will change anything (like democrats wanting medicare for all) then I definitely wouldn't get your hopes up tho.

Also Trump is very popular with his base, which is still completely energized. He is absolutely running again in 2020.

the Democrats are going to run rampant during the midterms and it strikes me as a bizarre form of pessimism to think otherwise 'because they're Dems and Dems don't win'. the Repubs struggled to keep Gingrich's old seat, lost a statewide in Bama, got crushed in Virginia, and are still running -6 in the generic ballot (though that figure has cratered since the shutdown, the public clearly blames Dems).

and historically speaking the president's party almost always loses seats in the midterms of the president's first term. there is an innate equilibrium to American democracy that is only upset under an extraordinarily popular president (id est Bush 2 post-September pre-Iraq). Trump is shall we say not so popular.

How many times during history has the party out of power done everything it could to suppress enthusiasm and grassroots support though.

If the democrats go into 2018 braying for bipartisan solutions, generally wonkish platforms, and wanting to work with Trump, it will truly be a test of historical precedent.

The Alabama senate seat was won by democrats in large part due to black women getting out and voting in record numbers. Even then, it was very close. Once again, a big factor will be if the black population gets out and votes (or is not suppressed from voting) for someone not named Barack Obama.

I just want to take a moment to say I want Trump to stop saying "clean coal." And probably not for the same reason as you all.

I want him to stop saying it because it always seems to shine a light on just how the left can be as idiotic as the right.

    To explain:

Every time he says it, the left comes up with a billion memes about how clean coal doesn't exist and stupid jokes like, "Do I wash it in the sink?"

When in reality it's a term for coal technology to reduce the amount of pollution it emits. It's a term that has existed since the 80s.

Now, I am not saying I am pro-coal. I find it to be inefficient, costly, and the amount of technology done in the clean coal process is not nearly enough, and really imo, unnecessary since we have cleaner alternatives. But when the left acts this stupid about the term not knowing wtf it means, then the right has no reason to listen to us when we ask for something else.

Be educated, talk about why clean coal is not effective and how it's costly to create and implement these technologies. Don't pretend like it's a made-up phrase Trump invented.

If a Democrat says that they might be making fun of the time Trump tried to describe clean coal and literally talked about taking it and cleaning it.

Also clean coal technology is a hoax so there's that.

I don't think he understands what it is, and that was stupid. I also think it turned into people believing:

Also clean coal technology is a hoax so there's that.
Because that was so long ago, memories are short, and now they seriously think it doesn't exist.

Even the UK has a clean coal initiative.

Thinking it's a hoax is rather ridiculous.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...lean-coal.html

Cost. The technology works. The economics don’t. Power plants with C.C.S. cost about 75 percent more than regular coal plants, and the infrastructure required to transport and store CO2 is enormous.

Again, Clean Coal is bad because there are much cheaper/better alternatives. But you'd really have to convince me it's a hoax.

Hoax is strong, agreed, but the idea that you can have clean-burning coal or coal that stacks up to any other source of energy in terms of environmental safety just holds no water.
