Getting second opinions on this maybe this isn't as bad.

    CHIP is funded.
    Mitch made a clear promise.

If dems can get something every 3 weeks from a shutdown I'd actually be happy.

I feel like everyone knows what the Dem base wants except for the actual Dems in congress, and it's not like they aren't being told.

Ask Susan Collins how much a promise from McConnell is worth.

I know full well that it's the largest donors bemoaning the shutdown that are making Schumer jump boat, and fuck him for caving. Where does he thinks those donors are gonna go? Republicans? They would have already gone there if they wanted to. They needed to show spines here and failed; get these old geezers out of here and let's see what the new faces coming up in the party can do. They quite literally could not do any worse.

I don't really care about this reopening. Dems demands on DACA are now clear, and they've demonstrated the ability to shut down the government and stay unified. They spoiled Trump's one year anniversary party and they can go back at it in 3 weeks without CHIP in the balance and with the battle lines clearly drawn.

Debt ceiling limits their ability to extract concessions as we press closer to March, because even if some good natured jersey barrier bumping is maybe okay, no one wants to be the one who drives the country off a cliff.

This was their chance and they blew it.

it isn't, and the hand-wringing lamentation of 'pussies' 'cowards' 'idiots' is the counterpoint to the irrational rage of the tea partiers who want their side to 'win' far more than they want the government function. the Democrats have achieved a tangible victory in getting CHIP funded for an additional six years, thereby ensuring healthcare access for 3.7 million children, and McConnell is on record in allowing a Dreamer vote in the coming weeks. and team elephant has achieved this by allowing through a temporary funding measure that only extends until February 8th (which is in itself a good given, you know, the government will run), at which point they can just as easily force another shutdown if Republicans refuse to moderate on the Dreamer issue. Republicans received no concessions and achieved nothing beyond avoiding the embarrassment a prolonged shutdown would have caused, and the reprieve from such may well only prove temporary.

The thing that sucks is that they shutdown in the Senate while the immigration hardliners are in the House, and that cross-chamber negotiation is messy.

They accepted the same deal that was on the table last week in exchange for nothing, because Mitch is a liar and even if he isn't Ryan is not obligated to bring a clean version to the floor and even if he does, Trump can veto it.

They need to tie it to a funding bill because our president is mentally incompetent and follows the last words of his administration's strong racist contingent that he hears.

indeed, a Dreamer Act in the Senate will probably fairly easily get passed with crossovers like McCain and Collins, particularly if they add some funding for border security to make it more politically palpable for a red base, and i imagine Trump is desperate enough to be seen as a winner and a deal-maker he'd sign something of that nature. as you say the real issue in achieving that kind of immigration compromise will come in the House.

And the problem in the house isn't that the Senate compromise wouldn't pass, it's that Paul Ryan wouldn't bring it to a vote because he's terrified of being ousted by the Freedom Caucus.

They got CHIP funded and the govt running.

We got idiots to fight with like John Kelly in the white house and the house itself.

On top of this shutdowns don't usually have any lasting memories. If we get two in one year maybe people will finally care enough to show out in force to flip congress.

Funding bills have to originate in the House though don't they? I think it's going to be much harder to get a decent deal on immigration for any bill that starts in the House.

CHIP is funded for how long? Because if its for years, that's one less chip for Rs in a couple weeks at the next deadline.

That's the game. This is something the Democratic base cares deeply about. Either they do actually extract a vote from Republicans and score a legislative victory they can tout, or they slam them for breaking promises and point to how all Democrats are on the side of Dreamers but Republicans break their vows. Either one lets them keep firing up their base as we head towards November. The second is more likely an outcome because it lets Republicans also show their base they don't play ball with DemocRATs and want to kick out all the illegals. So everybody wins. Except us, of course.

6 years. whatever else is to come it is a not inconsequential achievement. the program is cheap, even cost-saving in the long-term, and since its inception the uninsured child rate has fallen by >60%. nauseating the Republicans turned one of the few government programs that is an unqualified success underwrit by a categorical moral imperative into a football but then they have become an oft-nauseating party.

I'm not so sure the Dem base will see it that way if a vote on Dreamers doesn't happen. Many will read it as Dems giving up their bargaining position for empty words.
