Has Obama ever talked about why he was so hard on illegal immigrants during his tenure? I'm hearing more and more from sources i actually like talk about how bad Obama was on this front but how no one ever talks about it. I'm curious as to why he didn't take a lenient approach to it like pretty much every other Dem is right now.

Or is this everyone misremembering and Dems in general only became this lenient after DACA?

I read an interesting take today on how the majority of Trump's base is made up of people who will soon be retirees collecting welfare and eligible for Medicaid, but if they continue to push for deportation of immigrants the U.S. workforce won't be large enough to support them when the time comes.

It's true! I didn't die today and there's no brown people around me. Coincidence? I think not!

He took Republican immigration concerns seriously, and thought that if he proved he was tough on the illegals that he could get comprehensive immigration reform passed.

However, Senate Republicans filibustered the 2010 bill, and after the 2013 bill passed the Senate with 68 votes, John Boerner refused to give it a floor vote in the House.

Why he continued deporting people at record rates once it was crystal clear that Republicans weren't operating with anything resembling good faith, I couldn't tell you.

it is especially interesting as Obama presided over more deportations than any president in history even though the rate of illegal immigration slowed drastically under his tenure relative to Clinton and Bush. that is to say even though the problem became smaller he acted far more aggressively than his predecessors.

Maybe he just forgot to tell his officers to stand down after republicans acted in bad faith. I mean, the dude was pretty busy after all. Kinda like driving to work and being like "shit did I remember to turn down my ice officers before I left?"

Maybe Bush's ICE surge had its intended effect.

I feel like Democrats ignoring the fact that Republicans are acting in bad faith is the story of all of D.C. since at least 2008.

I think the more pertinent criteria is who is being deported rather than how many.

From what I understood Obama's efforts focused primarily on criminal activity, Trump's shift to anyone and everyone would be the significant difference.

    That's just my impression though.

Also I think archi's point about Obama doing it to muster political capital has a lot of validity as well.

Maybe this is perception from reading all sorts of articles in the last year but Trump hasn't done anything to ICE. ICE has just been pushing boundaries and getting no response from the federal govt so they're just pushing as far as they go.

Even if he hasn't given any directives, and I'm not sure that's true, he's made very clear to the more thuggish elements of ICE that the shackles are off.

I'd be real surprised if he has given directives and things haven't leaked. That said the worst elements of ICE are free to do as they please.

Hopefully dems start coming together on getting rid of ICE rather than leaving it to the Dem Socs groups who are already anti cop as it is.

My brother-in-law is a GS14 supervisor with ICE and this is exactly the case. He's had to reign in on his subordinates more within the past year than his entire time altogether at the position.

The amount of deportations in a year at this point isn't even an ICE officer thing - it's literally about the bandwidth of immigration courts. Obama was able to deport more because his justice department was better staffed and more competent. This matters for rescinding TPS for Hatians and El Salvadorans as well - more people aren't going to get deported because we're already at max capacity in the courts, just the number subject to potential deportation will increase.

Yeah, now imagine what it's like when the subordinates and their supervisor are all in line.

Honestly, it's amazing to me how many people still don't understand dog-whistling.
