It's kind of hard to say he was a good Speaker of the House both from an outcome standpoint (the things he did were objectively bad for Americans) and from a "further the interests of the rich" classic Republican standpoint (failed to do anything about healthcare, passed a big budget).

Y'all keep saying Ryan failed, but he passed one of the most business friendly tax revisions in history, and gets to retire with a half billion in his PAC. People have ups and downs in their career, but Paul Ryan got his and I think to Paul Ryan that's all that matters.

Ya'll keep saying Lenin failed, but he enacted one of the most nation-friendly takeovers in history, and got to retire as dictator for life. People have ups and downs in their career, but Vladimir Lenin got his and I think to Vladimir Lenin that's all that matters.

This is why your logic fails.

Don't give me your scarecrows. Y'all acting like he's resigning in disgrace with zero accomplishments. He did the Republican thing, got a few laws passed, and is retiring young and with money in the bank. A bunch of democrats might not remember him fondly, but his rich friends sure as hell do. Your measure of success most likely does not match his.

His choices are retire rich and not deal with this shit any more or stay on and let Trump keep using him as a whipping post whenever it suits him...plus maybe deal with the unpleasant possibility of impeachment. The choice is fucking obvious.

He got a single law of note passed and it was objectively bad for the country, debt financing a transfer of wealth to corporations and the incredibly rich.

He is a bad person and a bad Speaker of the House, even if that same qualification makes him a good modern day Republican.

But he's retiring with a lot of money and did the Republican thing...so it totally makes him a good Speaker of the House. /s

its not and you are wrong. Do you even remember the negotiations that went into making him Speaker? Probably not. Oh well. I can't wait to be on the same fundraising circuit as this doof when he goes on to represent Lockheed or Deloitte, I will stare longingly into the eyes of a broken man.

Paul Ryan is terrible. He preached fiscal responsibility and a balanced budget, then does opposite, then fucking bails.
    Good riddance.

Tybro is right, Ryan was compelled to be Speaker against his own desires after seeing what the freedom cocks did to Boehner, received promises he wouldn't get the same treatment, immediately got the same treatment, and then progressed into an even more toxic legislative atmosphere following Trump's election. his brand was so irrevocably damaged going forward his reelection in 2018 was not assured and even were it the coming blue wave would likely have relegated him Minority Leader, either outcome a death knell for whatever tattered raiment remained of his presidential aspirations. he was in sum a man who hated a job he never wanted, hated dealing with both his fellow congresspeoples and the administration, was not especially good at any of it (though i'm not sure the Republican Party is manageable by anyone right now), and with no possibility of advancement going forward decided reading Atlas Shrugged to his daughters was a better way to spend his life than to continue to deal with this shit. and this from Romney's heir apparent just six years ago. it is less fall than collapse.

also if Ryan made you guys shoot blood out of your whatevers the sanguine effusion that will follow from a Speaker McCarthy or Speaker Scalise shall be Khornian.

while far from perfect it also enacted objectively needed reforms in our tax system already in place in almost every other advanced economy on earth, and to see it solely as an iniquitous transfer of wealth is dogma unconcerned with constructing an optimal economic environment.

He gave corporations everything they wanted in exchange for no more reasonable taxation scheme. It may be better than the previous system (if u belieeeeeve), but it isn't a VAT and it could have been.
