No I think this is the correct response when one of the major parties is basically being run by Ferengi.

Hey. Hey. Don't diss the Ferengi like that. They can at least understand that there needs to be at least some kinda limit to ultimate greed when it comes to leadership

"A Nagus must put the greed of the people before his own greed." or something like that.

Their culture even does have some protections against monopolization in the fact that they pretty much can't deny an offer of a buyout from a Nagus. The monopoly company could then be sold piecemeal to reset the market.

I'm actually not sure if the government is going to shut down tomorrow or not. Every time it was threatened since 2013 I haven't taken it seriously but this really feels like it did back then.

Prepare for a bunch of Dems to jump ship last second because they just have no spine. They'll acquiesce with nothing to show for it.

Couldn't find a transcript I could copypasta, so have a link to CNN with his statement on why he won't support a stop-gap to fund the government. Dude is dropping shade HARD.

I feel like you're ascribing some characteristics to the Ferengi that aren't supported in the fiction(after all, the 115th Rule of Acquisition is "Greed is eternal"), but I ain't tryin to argue Ferengi morality in 2018.

I've been rewatching DS9 and you'd be surprised how often comparisons between the two are relevant. For example, Rule of Acquisition #49 "Old age and greed will always overcome youth and talent."

I don’t understand why congress doesn’t put the agreed upon bipartisan deal trump rejected last week onto trump’s desk and dare him not to pass it. Then the shutdown would be on him and him alone. I honestly think that’s a win:win for both congressional parties. Either crises averted and he signs, or he vetos it and takes the blame for shutting down a bipartisan bill to fund the government.

The GOP controls what comes up for a vote. Why would they choose to have a showdown with their president when they can showdown with democrats instead and believe they can blame the latter for the shutdown?

Also, that bill, if it's the one I'm thinking of, curtails legal immigration in order to protect DACA recipients which is insane.

It limits it somewhat. But even with eliminating the lottery, those visas don’t go away. They get allocated to immigration to poorer countries like Haiti and Africa (this is where the shithole comments came from, where they’ll reallocate the lottery visas). So by eliminating the lottery, they don’t actually lose immigrants. Just change how those immigrants obtain visas.

Also, the GOP can blame democrats, but they know they’ll (the GOP) be blamed. They’re not stupid. It’s why democrats have dug their heels. They know they’ll shoulder no blame. Dems are fighting for a massively popular program and they hold no majority in the executive, upper, or lower chamber. Dems have massive leverage. That’s why I don’t understand why congressional Republicans, in a year they look to be swept up in midterms, don’t pass blame onto the executive branch.

Yeah. I was thinking of the Grand Nagus Brunt arc where they need to stop him because Brunt's greed in that position of power would tank the whole Alliance.

I'm not seeing anything about any guarantee that the former lottery visas will go to shitholes. The visas will change to "merit-based" or "skills-based" meaning there will be some kind of metric for how they're handed out, a metric that will be administrated by Turmp's state department. Unless I'm wrong and the guarantee does exist, you can rest assured those will go to white countries or just not be handed out at all.

I didn't say I believe it. It just seems that they do.

The bipartisan bill that was dropped on Trump at the infamous shithole meeting had that language. It’s what spurned the comments about allowing people from these “shithole” countries.

    https://www.vox.com/2018/1/11/168803...ill-daca-trump

It would eliminate the visa lottery. But instead of just allowing 50,000 fewer immigrants into the US legally each year, it would reallocate those visas. Some of them would go to immigrants from underrepresented countries (my emphasis, shithole comment happens when discussing this aspect of the bill), just on some non-lottery basis; other visas would go to immigrants whose Temporary Protected Status is about to expire due to the Trump administration’s aggressive moves to end the program. (Right now, people with TPS can’t get green cards; under this deal, they could.)

I can't read the article right now but the language in your quote is "underrepresented," IE countries from which the US doesn't typically receive many immigrants. There's nothing there about shitholes.

Edit: In other news, Schumer is letting the GOP know he's not ready to play hardball. He supports the idea of passing another CR, but it's okay because this one would only be for a few days.

Just as an update, the current 30-day CR that passed the house funds CHIP for 6 years but does nothing about DACA.

FTR, the CBO projects that CHIP would have a negative net impact on the debt (it would save the government money) if funded for 10 years because healthcare plan prices are going to rise and the government will mostly be paying the Obamacare subsidies to buy those plans for kids if they aren't paying for CHIP directly.
