That being said if we have another 2.5 years of this economic trajectory and Mueller ends up being a dud and Trump doesn't royally fuck up something else he'll probably be somewhat formidable.

Legitimately the path to victory in the democratic party is to bring out voter enthusiasm. I doubt third party candidates will be able to get as strong as a foothold since the DNC itself has undergone some actual reorganization especially with how super delegates have been not only reduced but also not allowed to vote on the first ballot. Bernie Sanders isn't the lightning in a bottle he was last time (Though his Media presence is VASTLY larger than it was when he threw his hat in 2016).

I think its likely that a general Dem candidate will beat Trump. But to count on any one dem candidate to beat the pack and make it to the final showdown to me is harder. It would also help if the media circus would also nail Trump on any of his scandals the same way they nailed Hillary with those emails but alas.

Personally I'm not gonna hope for any one candidate until the fucking thing starts and even then I'd fucking vote a ham and egg sandwich with a D stamped on the top over Trump.

I wouldn't say Trump's base support would never waver. But it'd be more akin to what happened to Roy Moore because in all honestly Trump will be the driving force for any republican election in 2020.
