The Menu is fucking great, I can't believe Ralph Fiennes didn't get an Oscar nomination for that performance.

Mauritanian with Benedict cumberbatch. On Netflix, really powerful movie about a real prisoners experience at guantanamo bay.

It was very self aware of what it was and you could tell it was written by DnD nerds and made with a lot of love. Movie was a fun time

Watched a couple of decent mysteries last night while up late with a baby.

The Kid Detective. Fresh take on the mystery genre. Young smart kid is good at solving mysteries. One of his friends goes missing and is never found. Kid grows up, is doing PI work but is clearly a bit strung out and never turned it around after his friend went missing as a kid. Mostly doing missing pets and low level stuff. Someone comes in with a murder they want investigated. Funny and dark.

Blue Velvet. Old movie, 1980's Directed by David Lynch. Not Mulholland Drive crazy, but still very good. Kid finds a severed ear in a field, goes to police and then decides to investigate on his own.

Oh, Blue Velvet stars a young Kyle MacLachlan between Dune and Twin Peaks. He pulls off the weird, borderline-psycho-yet-still-somehow-the-straight-character so fucking well and really shines in the David Lynch universes.

And yeah, you gotta ease into David Lynch. Twin Peaks does a good job of keeping it tame for several episodes and slowly easing you into madness. Blue Velvet was probably a bit off the rails for the mid-80's but easier to ingest today.

Save Eraserhead and Mulholland drive for when you're ready to dive in fully.

I think I'm gonna hit up some Cronenburg this weekend. The Fly, Videodrome, Scanners, Dead Ringers. My wife hates the overall aesthetic of 80s movies, so I'm usually watching these alone.
