I agree with your assessments for every other format, both based on what I know about them and deferring to y’all’s obvious expertise as I stick to commander and sealed events.

However! There are absolutely commander decks that it would make sense in - a fliers-matter Elminster is the obvious choice. It’s fodder for his (-) ability most times but can be cast in the late game if needed for protection and/or just a big body. Not hard to see it swinging in for 20+ flying in that kind of build which is usually lethal in the late game. It’s also one of those cards that is going to send a certain kind of player on tilt against it, which can absolutely be used to your advantage. That sort of thing is going to depend on the meta wherever you play.

It's 100% not something meant for standard. Continues the new status quo of every new set being 65% cards meant to prop up EDH which is all that WOTC actually cares about at this point.

I don't actually play commander, but I suspect there's a huge chance you'll be served just as well with enduring angel or metropolis reformer if a flying angel is what you need. If not, crystal barricade does it as well. I also recall an aegis of some sort and a turn 0 leyline doing the same. All these are cheap enough that protecting or losing them doesn't sting.

For sure it's pretty typical EDH fodder at this point big creature that looks good at first glance till you think about it. The spirit of casual EDH is basically "Hey I can build a Deck around this cool dragon from 2001" but there's nothing to really build around with AV either.

I just can't wait for the PW card that makes games take 18 hours.

It’s not the angel type that matters or even the protection effect; Elminster’s payoff ability says exile the top card from your library and make 1/1 fliers equal to the cmc of the card; angel type doesn’t matter to him. You’d run AV in the 99 so you can burn it with that ability in the midgame or to hard cast in the late game for a finisher that cant be countered (very relevant in commander) and a nice protection effect that is generally 3x more valuable in commander. You run the ancient dragons for the same reason. This is all wrapped in a top deck/flier support package. Very fun way to go wide in azorius.

Still early days for previews, don’t give up hope yet!

I for one see several commanders Im already doing preliminary builds for and several upgrades to the 99 in my existing decks!

The precon Yuna in particular I think is a really excellent lore-to-mechanics card and is going to make a hell of a summons deck. Poor Tidus!

Without giving it much thought and based entirely on current decks in standard right now Cecil, Balthier and Fran (despite Aetherdrift's not busted vehicles), Aerith, Summon Bahamut, Ice Magic, Darkness Crystal, Sephiroth, Fenrir, Lightning will absolutely see play. Need to see other cards first though.
If there's enough support for big red, clive will see play but that's doubtful since the meta is really fucking fast.

Vivi is definitely gonna see some play

They definitely nailed the flavor on a lot of the cards, think making some of them playable was a secondary concern.

The white Cloud is "we have Stoneforge Mystic at home" but his secondary effect of doubling equipment triggers is gonna find a use

Instant remove! Izzet prowess/double-spell doesn't need more help! Also praying they don't add an extra turns card, because they never seem to learn.
Also surprised they didn't make kain, jump or the dragoon lance to be more busted. I was expecting "exile * when it attacks, return it to the battlefield at the end of your turn (or next turn)" coupled with " it deals damage to target player equal to its power" or "when kain enters the battlefield it deals damage equal to its power."

    Likely impossible to trigger anyways.

Yeah I was also expecting that sort of effect for Jump rather than just “gains flying”. Big miss. There’s no shortage of other dragoons in the series to go that route with, though. Maybe a High Jump instant?

Why don’t you like extra turn effects? Just curious, I know people dislike them in commander in general so I’ve tweaked my deck that does it to chain enough together to get people to scoop rather than play it out. Mnemonic Deluge does WORK. I didn’t think people really bothered with them outside commander since they tend to be a bit unwieldly.

Again I know nothing about commander, but extra turns (and instant turn end spells like discontinuity and time stop) in standard really pushes unfun play mechanism in favor of hard control decks. It's how you get 45 minute do nothing matches until someone decides they can end the match in two turns, or in the case of whatever they were smoking when they made alrund's epiphany however many turns they need.
[edit] nothing quite like getting pecked to death by 1/1 birds because they had 1 more counterspell than you. Pray they had a hall of the storm giants to end it all faster.

In standard yeah but late game EDH is very doable.

Yeah it’s about the same in commander, and the solitaire turns compound even harder with another two opponents to wait through on top of that. I made a couple decks that did precisely what you described and they’re nearly as unfun to pilot as they are to watch. Nowadays I just have the chain-turn deck that has several hard wincons on top of the “I’m taking 8 extra turns now and am probably gonna add 4 more to that while they resolve, gg?” At that point it’s just another game-ending combo. If someone insists on playing it out they get what they deserve!
