The UI is dogshit, the performance is awful, it doesn't have enough support from WotC to have enough manpower to quash all the card interaction bugs.
And tournaments frequently break on WotC's end of things.

Also, WotC is handing development/support to Daybreak Games, and this has already caused Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate to slip and not be fully implemented on MTGO.

My buddy that I used to work with is illustrating magic cards again. It is great to see him posting work again. He has a few cards in the new 2x2 set coming out. The set looks awesome legit the first time Magic caught my attention in a while. That being said they are going a little overboard with new sets/cards and it makes it really hard to follow or care about the game. Reveals are so much less exciting. They should stick to 3 major sets each year, one reprint set for EDH/Legacy/Modern, and the secret lairs. Or get rid of the Secret Lairs I could take them or leave them.

I'm curious which artist is your friend. I assume it's one of the older/original artists since there's a few with cards in the set. If it's Ron Spencer, I'm going to be insanely jealous.

I agree completely that there's too many releases now. Once one spoiler season ends, the next one is starting. Secret Lairs were also better when they only happened 2-3 times a year instead of basically monthly now. I do like the artist series ones where the artists get to pick the cards they want to illustrate.

I saw a stat on Twitter just today: 2019-today is responsible for >40% of unique (?) MTG cards.

Magic 30 event tickets and Secret Lair for the event went on sale yesterday and from what I'm reading, the VIP passes sold out within minutes. The highest tier (Black Lotus VIP) was $700. This is just for entry to the event with various extras depending on the tier. It doesn't include entry to anything aside from the Command Zone.

The event schedule looks great for those who love to draft. Tons of set options will be available.

Edit: Good Reddit post about the schedule.

    Fuck paper, fuck WotC.

Great question; lazy writing device. For the first time in a Magic booster product, we're introducing serialized versions of cards that will list how many exist, and which one you have. For example, we're printing 500 of each serialized retro schematic—which feature what we're calling double-rainbow foiling—in The Brothers' War Collector Boosters. Each one will be numbered with their number out of 500, and they'll only be available in Collector Boosters! (Non-serialized schematic artwork versions will be available, too.) It's certainly an exciting time to be a collector.

I missed this. My friend I worked with is Ron Spears. He did Entomb, Akroma Angel of Wrath, Dancing Scimitar, Crucible of Worlds, and MANY other cards. He illustrated MTG for years.

Also I saw a recent graph. In previous years the average new cards released per year was around 1k cards and it was steady like that for a long time. In the last 5 years it has steadily climbed now we are at over 2k new cards per year. It is stupid.

I kinda like it since it gives collectors something to shoot for which should make pleb versions of cards cheaper for those who want them to play.

That's awesome, he's a great artist and has a lot of iconic pieces out there.

On the topic of new card releases, Unfinity and the Warhammer 40k Commander decks come out on the 7th. They actually did a great job on the 40k decks. As someone who doesn't play it, I like the flavor and abilities of the decks.

    Each card has 2 versions:
    1) 80's cartoon art (normal frame)
    2) Shattered Glass (above)

So 1000 bucks for a small chance to crack a Black Lotus that isn't even tournament legal, how fun

12 basics and 28 commons guaranteed too
