Refresh my memory: were you one of the people who was insisting that the USF4 changes to endless hard knockdown vortexes, unblockables, and FADC safety meant that SF4 was always a glorious triumph of gaming, and the BS we experienced for the vast majority of SF4's lifetime didn't matter? (I know Weltall was.) If so, then by the same token, fixing SF5's defensive deficiencies at the 11th hour means there was never a problem there, either.

For the record: I think every SF has serious flaws, and SF5's - even early SF5's - are within the normal range. I think most of the haters here were just mad that their SF4 skillset didn't transfer over, as is the case with many people literally every time a new SF comes out. I'm happy to see SF5 get more defensive options, but at the end of the day, even with V-Shift, it's still no SF2.

edit: To be clear, I'm saying that just as there was a horde of 09ers insisting that SF4's flaws were minor and irrelevant while SF5's were pervasive and gamebreaking, after SF6 is released, there will be a mob of players lamenting the halcyon days of SF5... just like every other time a new SF comes out. (But not the SF4 stans: they will remain stuck in 2015.)

This is the perpetual SF cycle.

Shoryuken class of 09 speaking but I'd take vanilla SF4 over pretty much any iteration of 5. Just speaking from the perspective of fun, can anyone genuinely say 5 is a more engaging game than any of its predecessors? 4 brought the scene back and 5 literally put it back into hibernation lol

sure vanilla was a heinously broken disaster in many ways, but it also had indestructible and therefore is infinitely better than anything that will happen in any version of V

Vanilla wasn't even that bad, cause most of the truly busted shit hadn't been found yet. Hell people thought Cammy was low tier in Vanilla.

The amount of butthurt “where’s muh parry!?” During vanilla was fucking nauseating at times.

And everybody hated Indestructible when it first came out. Lets not front lol. I’m half tempted to go into the old SF4 vanilla thread and pull up receipts but I’m lazy right now.

    This is fact.

This is bullshit. That shit was hype from minute 1. The EVO that brought it back years later made an amazing move btw.

Damn so many motherfuckas straight up gone since the vanilla SF4 thread. Regardless of your opinion, the excitement of the FGC being revived was an awesome time to be alive lol.

I remember thinking I'd never miss an EVO, but now you almost couldn't pay me to attend. The games aren't hype at all, outside of some Tekken that can be hit or miss. I think the last hype shit I saw was like DBFZ Sonicfox vs Japanese players. I don't even know if he still plays that lol. I can't remember the last time I saw a SFV match...I guess Capcom Cup 2019?

Pandemic aside, the FGC (and specifically, the Street Fighter FGC) is still alive and well during SF5. Street Fighter League is in season 3, and there's been a ton of talk about the Winter Update... and not "I'm going to finally reinstall" but "I'm excited for the changes and new content."

For all the talk about how great SF4 is, that game is a lot less visible 5 years after its replacement than ST or 3S were. USF4 has achieved SFA3 levels of abandonment.

The 4 side tournament at combo breaker 2019 had at least 100+ entrants which was more then some of the games on the official line up.

This really can't be stressed enough. Outside of NYC and California ask anyone and they'll tell you that thier numbers for V aren't even half of what they were during USFIV. To be fair a lot of the people who left in our scene left becasue they were married with kids and fighting games just weren't in the picture anymore.

Most of my scene was already married / college or out of college. They just hated V and never came back. We used to have to turn down folks for ranbats and the list would fill instantly (large cap too). You couldn’t find 4 people to join one for V now.

Fuckin' do it. I'm sick of the revisionist history in this thread right now, lol. Lotta people acting like they weren't shitting on 4 because it wasn't going to be Chun vs. Ken vs. Yun for the next 8 years. "This shit ain't 3rd Strike! All hail 3rd Strike!"

I remember hearing the whining when Yun was added in Super. Half the people were laughing because SF4 "finally gave into 3rd Strike" while the other half were like me and groaning at what was to come from hearing "WHOO! HEEYUP!" again and again for the next few years. Thankfully I already had a superior version with Rufus' "HIYEEE!" dive kicks by that point.

And this is someone who thinks the only good thing in V are some of the music tracks. And G. Power to the Earth, indeed.

I mean, there were 24 games in the "official lineup" at Combo Breaker 2019. I would hope USF4 could get more entrants than SFEX2+ or TMNT Tournament Fighters.

Implicit in that question is that you are asking people who were around for SF4 (e.g. SF4 players), which puts a significant bias on the question. If you want to gauge the health of the SF5 community, wouldn't it make more sense to talk to actual SF5 players? Of course there are going to be SF4 players whose scene died for SF5, just as there are SF2 and SF3 players whose scene died (or did not revive) for SF4.

It's also worth asking... where did these scenes go? Did the players stay on in a smaller SF4 scene (as happened with ST and 3S), or did they simply quit the FGC? If they also stopped playing SF4 because they were "married with kids," I don't know what that really tells us about either game.

I went back and read a bit of the vanilla SFIV and SSFIV threads as well the as the first SFV thread and man, history repeating itself lmao. Weltall shitting on SFIV to the point people were telling him to stfu, people complaining about scrubby shit they hated about SFIV which ultimately Capcom listened and fixed in SFV (and now they hate it too). There were more people around back then but that's not really a knock on SFV killing the BG fgc though as there's just less users around overall anyway.

Ultimately, everyone's scene is different and speaking from my own scene here in S. FL, it was on a downturn already during USFIV but got a nice bump with SFV. We've only really got one venue now compared to like 3-4 spots back during SFIV days which is all the more reason Capcom needs to unfuck their netcode for the current game and SF6.
