Difference is most everyone grew to really like 4 after only a couple of months into vanilla. It had a lot to figure out and develop into.
5 is still utter trash half a decade+ later.
Edit: also, every scene got an initial bump with SFV. It didn’t take long for those people to quit. EVO entries had a ridiculous amount of people sign up for SFV before the game even came out, then it had the highest amount of no shows / auto-Dq ever. I paid for the entry fees and then didn’t even go; a lot of my friends did the same. Trash game remained trash.
Not everyone, I never really liked 4 and still don't. But it was what everyone was playing so I kept going.
I will say i probably had more fun around the launch of 5 then I ever did with 4, but that likely almost entirely due to the sheer entertainment of making Welt rage quit me on because of how much he disliked Bison. Still a bad game tho
They had a huge opportunity too. They being the FGC scene. SF4 / MVC3 had built tons of momentum. Twitch was gaining massive popularity. Fighting games are easy to watch and grasp for general audience, for the most part. There is a clear life bar and usually only 2 characters on the screen. Just awful, awful decision making and development overall.
damn near everyone left on BG chimed in and not a single soul said that they preferred 5 over vanilla lol
Weltall flip flopping doesn't make 5 more meaningful. The game killed any and all growth the FGC gained under SF4.
I will quickly admit I didn't like SF4 for like the first month it was out. Graphics, big ass feet, etc didnt look or feel right at first. But I never once stopped playing it and after a very short time loved it. Nothing wrong with that. Game was fucking S tier. 5 is for bads / people that have no other career and play it for money.
He didn't like it for "the first month" because of the "graphics."
Continue digging, sir.
So I didn't even like 4 that much, but I was always playing it because at least it was complete game and was actually fun with friends. When 5 came out it just killed any interest cause it wasn't even a complete game and online was terrible. It didn't help that the gameplay which I didn't even mind at first quickly devolved into the most boring shit ever. I haven't played 5 since season 1 and I have no desire to pick it up again. With GG having a solid rollback netcode now I doubt I'll even come back for 6.
I was so confused at first lol. I forgot about that idiot and don't see his posts, unless you quote him. The fact that there is hardly anyone left here is all anyone needs to know about 4vs5 preference. EVO BG threads used to be the fastest moving thread in the Gaming section and now you have to search for it in the rare occurrence there is some kind of news worth a fuck.
SFV is for homeless people.
As you can see from Weltall's posts, things that people see as negatives one day can be seen as positives later on. What does it mean to say "I liked vanilla SF4 better than SF5 in 2020 (or even 2016)" if the things that one disliked about vanilla when it was current are now seen as advantages?
edit: I would say to ask him whether he thinks 1-frame-link combos are a good thing or a bad thing, but it's clear there is no sort of consistency to be expected, so that won't tell you much.
And just to clarify: we've already discussed SF5 at length here, and I'm aware that most BG posters (who are largely SF4 players) don't like it. Even if Capcom "fixes" the "problems" with it, it still wouldn't be SF4, so I wouldn't expect SF4 players to magically become converts. The issues that y'all have with SF5 have either been addressed long ago (e.g. single-player content, netcode, "player expression") or are unlikely to be addressed in a way that could satisfy you. And that's fine; SF4 players don't have to like SF5, just like many SF2 players didn't like SF3 and many SF3 players didn't like SF4.
I was primarily just pointing out that there's a distinct similarity between the significant late-life changes in both games, which will likely lead to hardcore SF5 players (and future SF6 haters) applying the same rose-colored glasses to past versions of SF5 that y'all apply to older versions of SF4.
You can't blame him for not knowing that he would enjoy 1 frame links because the game hadn't matured to a point where combo dexterity led to stylistic expression. Shit like run stop fierce, and C.Viper hadn't been explored at all during vanilla. We literally hadn't seen that hidden potential in SF yet.
Looking back at 5, the game was shit on release and it's only slightly less shit now. So much so that literally no one would prefer any iteration of 5 over what was arguably the worst iteration of 4.
1 frame links being required for SOME not all characters to even function in 4 was pretty bad but like everything going into 5 Capcom went way to far in the other direction so now a fucking 3 year old can do the optimal stuff.

You keep talking about SF5 players looking back fondly at 5, and what literally everyone else here is trying to say is there won't be anyone doing that because no one plays the game. SF5 hurt the scene as a whole. Full stop. What you or I feel about 5vs4 doesn't matter when the scene as a whole clearly isn't what it used to be.
Disagree. Abel's main BnB's contained one frame links and everyone could do them. I mained Dudley (with shit execution) and was still decent with him. Certain 1 frame links were hard, and chaining long combos were hard, but you don't need those to be able to compete at a decent level
edit: sorry for the double posts - but TLDR: 5 still sucks. 4 was p good in retrospect. Lets pray 6 isn't shit
For the record I probably like V more then anyone else posting in this thread. I only got to play IV for the last year of Ultra and was never able to grow much before V hit. I still hate shit like the entire vsystem and invincible reversals requiring meter and the fact that the scene basically died becasue of it.
