I still say characters like Ibuki crossed the line though. But like I said I'll take the 1 frame links over everyone doing optimal damage every hit becasue my disabled grandma can do the most optimal stuff.

SFV is for those people that have to split a 1 bed hotel room between 5 people and probably drove, arguing about gas costs.

Surely you don't believe that the posters here are representative of the SF5 playerbase...? You guys gave up on the game over 4 years ago.

If you think SF5 is dead as a game, I don't know what to tell you. Allowing for the pandemic, Street Fighter League is still alive and kicking, Capcom Cup is going as strong as ever, SF5 was one of TWO video games in the freaking video game Olympics (until COVID postponed it). Your local scene is not representative of the game. It just isn't.

Okay forget local scenes then... Is SF even the main game at Evo anymore? Last I checked, it had been on the decline for 2 straight years

Yeah V hasn't been the top game at evo for at least two years now.

V held the headliner spot up until 2019 where Tekken was second to last and Smash finished off the night. Entrants wise, Tekken and SFV were pretty much the same while Smash shit on both of them. iirc, the slot change also came about from Capcom asking for an earlier time slot since in 2018, the tournament ran mad late in comparison to previous years. Shit ended at like 3am for east coast.

Its more capcom wanting the time slot that can accommodate the most people on an international scale.

Even if we go off of Evo entries, SF5 is still doing fine, and is the most consistent game in the FGC. Remember back in 2018 when DBFZ was going to take over the FGC and ArcSys was ascendant? The next year, DBFZ fell from first to sixth.

I mean, it's one thing to say that going from 2500 to 2000 entrants at Evo means the game is dead, but look at everything else going on. Two prime-time ESPN broadcasts and an Olympics-backed Intel World Open? These are things that were simply unthinkable during SF4 and earlier eras.

Street Fighter V AE: CHAMPION EDITION

Just to chime in on something that was mentioned a few posts back. I’m an anime player mainly since 2000 with GGX piquing my interest, before that it was SSF2ST/MK2/KI/MvC1 but i was a kiddo with little knowledge of how deep a fighting game goes. I’m still mainly an anime player, but holy shit did i enjoy the hell out of SF4, even in vanilla, it was consistent for me to be around my friends who also enjoyed playing with me locally and we got better, hell even DeeJay and Richardd swung by my old place a couple times to play locals and had a nice little gathering, and then U/MvC3 where i was playing and getting handled by Flocker, but still enjoyed it as it was always fun to gather people, even had PR Rog over at my place once because he got an early copy of UMvC3 and Flocker and him are really good friends.

Tbh SFxT completely ruined the FG scene for me because of how dumb and convoluted it was, Xrd came out and i still play it here and there, hell i went to my local arcade to play some Xrd last weekend and teaching my gf a little because she wants to start playing Strive. Now Strive with this netcode is gonna be god tier and my bois are getting it too so locals are gonna be a thing again. Other than that, i play smash bros and played in a few local tournies at bars that had some players that went to some majors lol.

Now i never mentioned SFV, but i only gave that game a week and i dropped it very quickly, i couldn’t get myself a fucking steam refund so i’m stuck with it. That game sucked from the start for me, and i could never get a grasp of it because everything about that game felt way off. I think what turned me off the most was seeing Cammy’s Cr.Mk whiff even tho there is clearly a hit, you needed to hit them with her knee because she’s an amputee when she does that move, her boot wasn’t part of her hitbox.

SFxT and it’s “gems” lol. Completely forgot about that train wreck.

Despite all this I’m still optimistic about SF6. Capcom has practically become a completely different company since the release of V putting out quality products one after the other. And you know the whole Ono getting fired thing lol.

All they had to do was copy SF4 but with the Tekken roster + more SF characters and it would have been a massive hit. Fucking fools.

The SFV scene isn’t growing. TV broadcasts and Olympics happening are the result of competitive gaming culture going more mainstream. The SFV scene itself is contracting despite all that extra backing bc the game is shit. Most fighting games players would agree which is why you see it losing in entrants to decades old Smash games despite all the monetary incentive to play

"everything is losing to smash" because Street Fighter and Marvel are the only IPs that had a player-base comparable to Smash. With that said, Tekken has largely grown year over year with regard to entrants:

    2016: 549
    2017: 1,278
    2018: 1,538
    2019: 1,885

SFV didn't have the same growth trajectory as Tekken because no one liked it, despite all the funding from outside sources.

If SFV were actually good, Evo wouldn't be a Smash tournament.

SFV is for people who come in dead last in their fantasy league.

    I feel personally attacked.

How was I supposed to know my first 5 picks would all tear their ACLs in the first 3 weeks of the season? (that happened to me back right around when 5 came out)

This thread is a dumpster fire. Come 6, you'll be saying the same shit because it isn't 3rd Strike. The amount of goalpost moving is hilarious. The amount of "yeah I was wrong about 4 but its okay because I was right about V", as if ANYONE thought V wouldn't be hot trash given that every game Capcom put out in that era that wasn't RE7 was hot trash is hilarious.

You think that because you got one right on V that it eliminates all the WRONG you were about IV? Absolutely absurd. A bunch of circle jerking and goalpost-punting feel-good nonsense, piling up against a game that came from one of the shittiest periods of Capcom's history. Wow. Excellent job.

A broken fucking clock is right twice a day. Lets go back to how many times you were wrong? How many times you'll BE wrong because you can't stop sucking 3rd Strike's dick because you were a teenager back then and it represents the best period in your life?

    This fucking thread, lol.

obligatory: Smash isn't a fighting game

Yes, competitive gaming is going more mainstream. But the Olympics could have chosen Overwatch, or LoL, or Starcraft, or Fortnite, or any number of vastly more popular games. But they chose a fighting game, and not just any fighting game, but SF5. It is not an accident that SF5 got an ESPN broadcast, and then another one, and a TBS broadcast, and now this.

Let's also keep in mind that the "successful" game you are comparing SF5 to - SF4 - was not in the top 50 of sales on 360 or PS3. After the era that started with SF2 and ended with MK3, fighting games are inherently a niche product, and SF4's "revival" didn't change that. SF5 has been and continues to be punching far above its weight when it comes to media representation. I don't think it's even arguable that SF5 has gotten far more media interest than SF4 ever did; what was the SF4 equivalent of Lupe Fiasco, Kenny Omega, and/or Xavier Woods?

edit: Basically, on one hand you are comparing small sales vs very small sales, or 2000 tournament entrants vs 2500... and on the other, you have SF5 making all kinds of record inroads that no other fighting game (not even SF2!) has done before or since. Set aside your own personal dislike for the game and it's hard to dispute that SF5 has achieved so many things that were unheard of for the FGC.
