Yeah but with Hamilton likely retiring 2 or so years into the new cars, mercedes is gonna want to start training his replacement, and as much as I like the guy Bottas just ain't it.

Checo is pretty good for Max. I think someone like Gasly is ready for the RBR car now, but he absolutely would not take one for the team like Checo would. I don't think rbr wants a number 2 who is constantly trying to one up Max and risking the competition over it.

FIA rules are FIA rules, though it is unfortunate that they cannot look at extenuating circumstances like this and weigh it differently. That said, if they did make an exception this time it absolutely opens them up to lawsuits later, which invalidates the rule.
A perfect example is Hamilton v Verstappen at Silverstone. If they made an exception this time, and that happened later, Red Bull could sue to have their engine replaced without penalty for what was clearly a racing incident that leaned Hamilton. It doesn't just stop there. An accident is an accident, regardless of fault, you'll have constructors scheming to damage parts so they can replace them mid season.
The worst part of this is it will change how the drivers race, making them less safe. If you're coming around the apex and in front ala Verstappen, even though you have more rights to the racing line, leaving a bit more room (which he incidentally didn't do) while in control of the line becomes even less appealing since damaging your parts is not a worry anymore.

For reference, Bottas was at fault, but there was barely anything he would have been able to do. Everyone had shit tires and he had a bad start, sped up to fix it, but the second he sped up, it was too late. He was pincered by Norris and Perez. Norris takes a tiny amount of blame as he should've been more careful with conditions. Basically there is no visibility at all if you're behind a car and the track is wet. That first curve is 100% guess work. So anything more than a 5 place penalty would've been excessive.

Yeah they punish the action taken by the driver, not the consequences of that action. They need to take a look at cap considerations though cause rbr talking 1.8mil in damages in Silverstone and likely another 1mil+ in damages this race all in the opening moments of both races is pretty wild.

The only other team that had a shot at beating merc/ham was 2017-2018 ferrari/vettel and vettel pretty much blew it on his own. Everyone just wants to see the giant go down.

It's funny how this is only a concern when it effects Verstappen's ability to beat Hamilton, but was barely a conversation point in the prior years since they added in the cost caps.

Feels that way, but I know I'm biased against Verstappen in every situation someone is not flagrant with him.

I can see Perez getting the swap in a season or two if Gasly keeps performing like he has. No reason for him to go anywhere else though, and as long as he's bringing in more points than the #2 he's gucci

Perez is too experienced and focused to be swapped out with Gasly. Also, not with him having double Gasly's point.
