If an actor, who are all activists, attempted to force their directors to film something related to their own personal social justice opinions that actor would be laughed off the movie set.
Instead actors use their fame to spread their ideals on talk shows and interviews. Just like athletes can do, but apparently aren't bright enough to see that... Or rather some aren't bright enough. Chris Long and Malcolm Jenkins are out there doing work just fine.

So kneeling during the anthem = forcing directors to change a movie? That’s a hell of a stretch there.

Now if they were walking off during the coin toss and refusing to play, maybe that argument would be valid.

The NFL actually has taken a very strict stance on domestic violence, post Ray Rice. Cowboys fans will tell you all day and night that there was no evidence against Elliott, but Goodell made damn sure he had him suspended for just being mentioned alongside violence against women. Melena, you are either way out of the loop or you're just wrong (probably both). A player's name even mentioned in the same sentence as domestic violence is basically an automatic suspension, proven guilty or not.

The problem people have with Goodell is his inconsistency. For one player, it might be 3 games, another 4, another the year. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he and the league have more access to evidence than the public does. I work in this field, so I know exactly how ignorant and uninformed the public can be, and I'm not even allowed to comment and provide facts.

Also, anyone that thinks these players "deserve" a roster spot for decreasing their owners' revenue is an idiot. That doesn't fly in almost any occupation in the World (struggling to come up with a single example), and it sure as hell doesn't fly under the watch of billionaires. The NFL has absolutely suffered, due to the kneeling. RIP Papa John too.

They suspend people for illegal domestic violence accusations.

They blackball people for legal protests.

Look, if a team wants to make a rule saying "no kneeling" and a player breaks it and is suspended or released, fine.

But they don't! They allow the players to do this, and then never hire them again without saying why.

There is a rule, in the official NFL rulebook, about having to stand and be present for the Anthem (and exactly how you should hold your helmet) that was in place well before any of this started.

Which has never been enforced (and I've never even heard of)

The NFL, and sports in general, is literally a television show made for our viewing pleasure, that's all it is in the end. Anything that goes off the NFL brand is going off the script the NFL has put together.

This isn't rocket science. If my employees attempted what these athletes did during the events I run in my workplace they'd be fired instantly. That employee would be attempting to turn a gala about whatever into whatever crap that employee is attempting to push. I wouldn't put up with it. Do that shit on your time. I have my own agenda I'm attempting to get out there. Your personal agenda isn't welcome on my dime.

I can't help that you are ignorant to the rule book. The fact that it wasn't enforced means the league was being nicer than they could have been about it.

So players should be unofficially punished, but not officially punished (but only some of them)?

You have to realize how fucking stupid that is - we'd certainly never tolerate such flimsy rule implementation during the game, but you seem to encourage it.

    wrong

first it’s not in the nfl rulebook, it’s in the game operations manual, which isn’t really enforceable (as far as “legality”) by any standard. it mostly deals with shit like uniform violations and concussion protocol and other nonsense that can be overlooked

furthermore, i only point this out because ive had this argument before, but the language used doesn’t dictate that players “must” stand for the anthem

"The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem. During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses."
yes the use of “should” and “may” is a nitpick, but so is everything else about this argument

edit: should also be noted that anything discipline related here only applies to not being on the field for the anthem

Care to repeat who's ignorant of the rule book? Also as a reminder, it was only after 9-11 when Patriotism swept across the US that the National Anthem was done with all players on the sidelines and turned into a pre game political gala. Before that it was performed and all players and coaches would be in the locker room.

the only consequences cited are for being on the field, and technically if you are kneeling you are more on the field than if you are standing so Reid and Kaep should actually be given additional rewards
