Dunno. I brought that up and got whiteknighted like hell. Guess asking what you're actually buying at the very least is too much nowadays.

From what I understand of the translated announcement over the DLC, Nintendo went to Sakurai with X characters in mind and asked "Can this work for fighters?". Sakurai said yay/nay and then they replaced the ones that Sakurai didn't think would work.
Keep in mind this is still DLC, and Nintendo (and any 3rd parties) want to sell it. Which means their ability to put up smaller stuff, shoehorned for cross-promotion, or non-requested characters goes down a good bit. Geno and Banjo are still on the table IMHO, Banjo probably at the top of that list.
Nintendo, for all their practices, know how to make money. I don't doubt there will be one "wtf" addition, but we should still be getting 4 solid roster additions.
I agree and disagree. They know how to make money, yes, but they also know how to give up on successful games after a single round of DLC.
There is no reasonable reason why Mario Kart 8, which was released on 2 consoles, does not have a season pass. You essentially have the smash bros of kart racers and you only release a single year's worth of DLC? That game could have had anyone from Megaman to a Fire Emblem character in it. It could have a goddamn Pokemon invasion. Instead, Nintendo loves to make a modern game, release 12 months of DLC, then demote the game to re-release status while they take 7 years to make its eventual sequel. They are absolutely terrible at continuous monetization.
The sad part about it is that they use such care in their DLC that they're actually a company I'd support a season pass with. Getting a steady stream of new characters, a few stages and a shit ton of songs would have my wallet basically making a monthly subscription to a game I already paid for. But nah, release like 3 extra things for a game that you're obviously intending to stay relevant in people's minds (hence the re-releasing on everything they introduce) then forget about it.
TLDR: MK8 should be on like, season 4 of its season pass, with everyone from Megaman to fucking K. Rool in its roster. The only reason the DLC should have stopped for Smash 4 was because of Smash Ultimate, but if this one is Sakurai's last one (it wont be)? We'd better get more than a single round of DLC. They're leaving money (honest money at that) on the table.
Just let me have my nigga Pirahna Pete back. Pirahna Plant is so close yet so far. I want my homie with the polka dot draws.
I mean for the most part this but at the same they have some of the most complexing headscratching decisions that I can’t even begin to understand. I can get the logistics behind not releasing some of these characters but like you said they could provide so much more that people would be willing to pay for. Such an odd company.
Their most recent one for me is the Ethernet adapter. Hey guys your completely handheld console should be plugged in.
I mean if you want the online play to be less shitty, yeah it should be plugged in. Wifi users are a plague in fighting games.
Current tech is limiting our idea!
Make it anyways!
The Melee section had me freaking dying >.>
Goddammit Melee, lolol
For anyone possibly unaware, there is a Nintendo Switch Holiday Experience going on in various places in the US and one of the games available is Smash Ultimate.

I got to go yesterday to the one in Florida. Line was pretty long, and I got to play once. I did horribly due to not being used to the Pro Controller and not being able to adjust its button layout, but it was fun regardless. They had smash balls on along with the smash meter. After I played, I stuck around a bit just to watch more gameplay.
I saw this at the mall yesterday near Phoenix. Pretty big line as well. Maybe a 60 minute wait to try it out and they did a four person match with 3 stock life.
Closest one for me is at Mall of America. Kind of tempted to go there. Never really looked around Minnesota before.

Nintendo should pay the creator of the Queen one, pay the band to use the song, and broadcast the video everywhere they possibly could.
Worth the cost just for word of mouth and the news story alone.

Rumors circulating that the first DLC character will be revealed at the Game Awards, and will feature a character from one of the Best in Genre nominees.
So I might have to endure it then.
God I hope not, because in my eyes that list is very VERY top heavy for DLC that is good, enjoyable, and worth the money.
No chance:
Mobile
VR
Fighting
Sport/Racing
Student Dev
E-Sport
Top Tier Chance:
Celeste - Indy
Protoman - Action
DQ/Octopath Rep - RPG
Maybe, but nonsensical:
Spiderman - Adventure
Not smart use of DLC:
Starlink - Family
Labo Man - Family
Cancerous:
Fortnite
I suddenly miss the days that the Game Awards rumors were for Metroid Prime 4.
