Originally he was a villain, a rival of Shazam/Captain Marvel, but in about 1998 or 99 DC turned him into an antihero.

So apparently at the comic con panel for DC, The Rock was asked if he’d like to do a Black Adam vs Superman film and he replied “That depends on who is playing Superman” which led the crowd to think Henry Cavill was going to appear or any news about Superman, but neither happened, and as the panel was wrapping up people began booing when it became apparent there would be no Cavill or Superman news.
