That was just the glasses- and only the glasses- which controlled a bunch of killer drones in outer space.

Which absolutely makes zero sense and those glasses were an incredibly stupid plot point for the movie and I hated that. It was nonsensical in pretty much every way you looked at it. But I'm definitely sure that if Parker was in charge of Stark Industries there would have been a mention of it somewhere in the movie.

What possible reason could Sony have for giving in to Disney's demands?

Even their "bad" Spider-Man movies made over $700M. Venom made over $800M. Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar. They would have to change some things, sure, but they can keep making Spider-Man movies without really needing a connection the the MCU. The MCU, on the other hand, loses out if it doesn't have Spider-Man.

Sony has nothing to gain and hundreds of millions to lose by giving Disney what they wanted. I get it, I'd be upset if it was 100% certain we'd have no more Spider-Man in the MCU, but Sony would be making a hilariously bad business decision to let Disney split things 50/50. Sony holds all the cards and Disney is jockeying for fan outrage to get some leverage.

But whatever, I have absolutely zero faith in Sony untangling Spider-Man from MCU without one or a mix of the following. A: Make everyone in the movies look like a fucking idiot for forgetting their past influences, B: Ignore everything that happened in the last 5 years story line wise, or C: Reboot the franchise yet again.....

Spider-man making 700 million when it cost them 500mil to make and advertise is 200mil profit for a ton of work.

Spider-man making 1.2 Billion while they sit on their ass and let disney handle it is way fucking better.

I'm not 100% sure exactly who paid for what, but Sony has made more profit from Far From Home alone than they did for pretty much all their other Spider-Man movies combined.

And again, Sony has literally 0 reason to give Disney a 50/50 split from a previous agreement of 5% of first dollar profits and merchandising rights. Maybe Disney does deserve a bigger piece of Spider-Pie but is Kevin Feige overseeing and Jon Favreau guest-starring worth hundreds of millions of dollars every movie? It's an insane hardball proposal and there's no way Disney doesn't know it.

High balling is how negotiations start. Sony refusing to play ball is the terrible part. I'm guessing there was something else that offended Sony people or they never planned on renewing the contract. Or there's still way more to this story that anyone knows. Or maybe all the Sony execs are now secretly lizard people now and Disney are all Skrulls.

The posted article says 50/50 co financing which could mean a lot of different things to me.

I believe financing and profit sharing are normally hand-in-hand as far as movies go, but I could be completely off base with that. That's based solely on a few shows I've seen coupled with my parents' friend working as a location manager talking about different shit.

Yes, and the general rule of thumb is that you need at least double the production costs before you see a profit due to advertising and stuff.

Also not sure if that's true. Do we have any numbers of how much they actually made because 5% is of the first dollar gross is definitely less than normal profit margins of a big film

There's no way you can slice this where Disney's proposal wasn't a ridiculous adjustment of terms and Sony countered with "nothing" which is an equally ridiculous and appropriate response.

We'll hear more about this and the final numbers will be more reasonable for everyone.
