In the comics it turned out that everything we knew about Nightwatch was wrong; he was a villain the whole time who found a spell that changed his history so that he could retire living off of his stolen tech with everyone thinking he was some C-level hero who did good and got out of the game.

Also they put a whole lot of emphasis on him in the mid-90s for a quickly-failed Spawn rip-off.
