The 2 words you can’t say in a Democratic ad
They have no intention of doing this.To avoid divisive intraparty fights that drive candidates left — only to be attacked by Republicans for favoring socialized medicine — the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee warned aspirants last year about the political liabilities of endorsing “single payer,” according to sources familiar with the advice.
Hi how are you
shut the fuck up and drink your bagged milk
If California wants to get rid of her, they can. This is the IDEAL situation in which leftists could make a case for going darker blue because it doesn't risk catastrophe.
But you seem to think "You go left where it's safe" means the party has an active obligation to purge anyone they think they can, and it's the kingmakers' job to get rid of her. And that's not the case.
You think Feinstein is only going to win merely because the establishment backs her?
And you don't think that the seniority and power she has in the Senate matters to them? I mean to give you one example of how that matters, remember when Feinstein was able to leak documents because she is the ranking Dem on the intelligence committee? Or, more practically, what about the relationships she has cultivated?
The Demcratic establishment will shift left when and if the composition of the elected Democrats shifts. You want that to happen, you need to elect more progressive Democrats. But be careful not to overreach because Dems are lazy about voting and easily disenfranchised and you will get punished for trying to go an inch too far. Sounds terrible? Because it is. Making peace with that is part of growing up. Progress is trench warfare waged over years if not decades, not blitzkrieg.
While I obviously don't agree with all of your positions on what progress is, this is absolutely truth. People take so many wrong messages from the Civil Rights Movement-- that was a movement that took *decades*-- it had leadership in place, they had spent a long time not only identifying the problems, but crafting solutions. Rosa Parks wasn't a spontaneous event that galvanized buried rage on a whim-- it was deliberate on her part, and it was seized on by the leadership that had been building toward a movement. And even after Rosa Parks, it was still *nine* years before the CRA was passed, and the Civil Rights Movement was, without question, the singularly most successful protest movement (really, the *only* successful protest movement), in American history.
Also, re: Feinstein being a centrist... this is kind of part and parcel with Gred's point. She's been on the leading edge of effective progressivism since she was elected. She's "centrist"-- she gives up things she doesn't care about to build coalitions and to get cross-party help to build things that actually matter for the progressive agenda. She's deeply liberal, but she's far more practical. If you want to move the liberal cause further left, replacing Feinstein is probably the single dumbest thing the Democratic party can do.
I'm not really sure I buy into the "we need a long time!" argument, myself. With how technology has advanced, we can have news within seconds of a story breaking. People being informed, be it by facts or alternative facts, is otherwise the risk of the process. Of course, things like term duration is a factor relative to political service, but the absence of term limits in some positions doesn't really help either side change if you get the same person in a position for decades. Like, I don't trust a bunch of 50+ year olds to be ruling on the internet, as an example, because they're not going to understand it like younger generations or even feel motivated to defend it as much because they literally grew up without it.
Frankly, I find the frustration of younger dems toward the old guard justified. It's hella easy to waggle a finger at them and say what they want is not how the world works, but you most certainly can not change how the world works if you refuse to try or parrot that the stars need to be aligned just right for any sort of chance. Certainly there are policies that should not be rushed through, but as things like our education quality plummets or people die/suffer without access to affordable healthcare, telling them we need to wait 2+ years isn't helping them in the moment.
I don't think that the ability to organize more rapidly and campaign for issues is actually necessarily going to result in better outcomes.
Take the judge recall election in CA, for example. He gave Brock Turner (who should be locked in a pokegym if not prison) a 3 month sentence at the recommendation of the sentencing committee and he got recalled for it because of a social media campaign led by angry liberals. I guess we need to encourage judges to give harsher sentences than the sentencing committee would recommend so they can keep their jobs? Do we want harsher sentences? Is that a liberal goal?
Social media and our increased digital connectivity makes it easier to react. It does not make it easier to think.
There is something inherently wrong with a system when a black man can be legally shot out of fear but a white kid can rape a woman and get three months.
if you think Brock Turner's sentence was appropriate because you believe in more lenient sentencing you have lost all perspective of what a criminal justice system is for.
and by the by the probation officer that recommended 6 months in jail (against the DA seeking 6 years in prison) used this reasoning
"this case, when compared to other crimes of similar nature, may be considered less serious due to the defendant’s level of intoxication.”
There is plenty wrong with our justice system and I do think it should have been a harsher sentence.
The social media campaign's message to judges was "we will recall you if you are not harsh enough," though. We have been down the "tough on crime" road before and it doesn't really jive with modern liberal objectives.
There is no recall movement being planned for the judges that regularly give the harshest penalties, just this one judge that gave a light sentence.

Utter bullshit.
Canada: The only sane place left in North America. Has to suck having such a muppet neighbour next to you guys for another 2 years. Feel sorry for those in the US who are stuck with an Idiotic Troll President, just wonder how much more damage he's gonna cause before he gets bounced out the door.
Also exploitable pic of pretty much every major leader right now when it comes to dealing with this gobshite...
