It was always a contentious issue, but Trump put it on steroids. Trump supporters have worked themselves into yet another mental knot to defend him by saying this is just something to throw at him. No, this is something he made an issue with things like chanting to build a wall, degrading alliances over immigration, fighting over control of the national guard, arbitrarily harming immigrant children then blaming it on political opponents, etc. This flaring up as an issue is entirely the doing of Trump, and not people trying to find a way to hate on him as if they needed anymore reason to. Saying no one gave a fuck before is entirely disingenuous and out of touch. Which is the norm as a large deal of Trump's supporters just live in an alternate reality of facts. Those who don't are just fervent idealists, opportunists, and fair weather friends.



Now, as for the dumb jacket. Regardless of if the message was directed towards immigrants, her abusive husband, the american people towards their president, or an overall trendy style of angst. In my opinion it is clear that the first lady did it purposely to grab attention and likely to annoy Trump. Remember that even just stealing attention from Trump in the media annoys him so it doesn't take much to set him off. Don't be surprised if Melania vanishes again after this and everyone goes "WHERE IS THE FIRST LADY" for three weeks until she shows up again begrudgingly for a photo op.

My boss got arrested taking part in an immigration reform rally in 2013. Immigrant groups were trying to fight for fewer restrictions on immigration and less deportation all throughout the Obama years. "Kids are being taken from families and locked up in detention centers" was suspiciously absent from their agenda.

Also whenever anyone says "well you didn't care about this when THIS GUY was doing it!" what they're really saying is "if I deflect this issue into about how the other side are hypocrites I don't really have to confront these things that make me uncomfortable to think about my side doing!"

My family has been here since pre-revolutionary era.

My great grandmother came here from Ukraine, my grandmother doesn't speak (or as far as I know, even know any) Ukranian, and supports Trump/watches Fox News, go figure.

One of her defining philosophies seem to be that she made it in spite of everyone/everything. So no one should get any help or a break because she never got any sort of mentality. This bitterness tends to perpetuate itself amongst immigrants (especially those who become successful) and their kids, and forms these bullshit arguments we get as they deliberately forget who they are and where they came from. Essentially Americans love their 'Marco Polo/King of the Hill' mentalities more than reason or even compassion.

This is something that effects everyone in some form of another.


And my experience has been a lot of immigrants are all ok with whats happening at the border because they "Did it the right way."

Which is just such a load of shit.

My father who immigrated from Egypt had better humanitarian sense than that, and again, he not only paid for himself but for 12! of his family to come here, too (5 of which ended up not showing up after he paid all that money).



If he could understand that you don't just rip babies from their parents even if he did it the right way, the rest of the immigrants can, too.


As an aside, said cousins are full on republicans and it takes all of the love of my father to not punch them in the face and realize yes they "did it the right way" but they didn't have to do shit. HE did it all for them. Least they could do would be to recognize that maybe, just maybe, not everything is so black and white, and the punishment doesn't fit the crime by any means.

Didn't know whether to post this in SCOTUS thread or here, but even though Mueller didn't need a warrant to obtain information about Paul Manafort's cell phone data, he obtained one anyway, eliminating the possibility that the defense could use today's SCOTUS decision to have that thrown out of court. Pretty savvy move that showed some real foresight and just goes to show how intensive he is about dotting those i's and crossing those t's.
