Also, enjoy your skyrocketing food costs when you're trucking in everything from across the nation. Hope you enjoy your 5 dollars to add guac at Chipolte if gas ever hits 10 a gallon.

higher gas prices will encourage the transition away from fossil fuels which is an end that justifies itself, subpar Chipotle guac be damned.

They haven't any other time gas spiked. In fact, they have raised passenger rates, but kept driver rates flat. In fact in Florida they sent everyone a message in the app saying "Oh by the way, passenger minimum fares are going up, but your rates are staying the same".

Gas in the bay area has gone up about 70 cents a gallon in the last 8 months. Not a single hike in pay.

Welp, enjoy your higher food and heating costs. 10 buck a gallon gas will absolutely destroy the economy. Trucking, Farming, Airlines. All that shit is going to get crippled if gas was to go that high.

Fewer than 10% of US homes are heated with oil, it's not going to impact most people's heating costs.

Necessity is the mother of invention, friend. If gas gets that high, EV/charging infrastructure is going to expand REAL quick

Honestly, sign up bonuses. The bar to be a driver is stupidly low. Have a pulse, be licensed for a year, and not be a felon. They are bleeding billions every quarter, with their #1 cost being driver retention, while still price warring with each other and trying to kill the taxi industry, and in Uber's case with their new stupid and dangerous express pool, taking aim at the public transportation/bus market.

In the last 3 years, they have slashed rates and fares by over 30% as their only focus is rider volume. This has also occurred during a time when gas has been at historically low prices. Now that gas is going up, along with idiot suckers locked into predatory leases, paying upwards to 800 a month on a car, which comes out of their driver pay (meaning if they don't drive, their car gets repossessed), while offering stupidly high sign up bonuses to offset the amount of drivers that quit every month. I've had passengers bitch that their 7 dollar ride became 8 dollars when Uber recently upped the minimum fare out here (of course no kickback to me on that).

If gas does make that astronomical jump where we start seeing 4-5 dollar nationwide, and it sustains it at that rate for an extended period of time, one of two things is going to happen. 1. You're going to have a mass exodus of drivers who are going to quit cause it's not worth it to spend money driving everyone around, while losing money on every ride. Or 2. Uber does a massive rate hike, with a pay hike to drivers to offset the gas hike, in which case you're going to have all the cheap passengers who think 4 bucks to drive 20 minutes is a ripoff all revolting and bitching up a storm, refusing to use the service. This is part of why Uber has such a huge focus on driverless car tech. Their end game is to not have a single human driver working under their app, that way they get to keep 100% of the fare cost, instead of the 50-70% the driver is getting on average.

I'm lucky in that I do it as a side job for extra bill/vacation money, so if it gets to be where I'm not making money to make it worth it, I can quit and it's not going to have a real effect on my bottom line. But those who drank the kool aid, invested heavily into driving it as a full time sustainable job, they are going to be the ones who get fucked, and chances are they are just going to wind up defaulting on their loans and having their cars repossessed as the credit hit will be better than the losing money on every ride.

My $4 quote from earlier is from my rural perspective, where we've been bouncing between $2.20-2.70 for the past year or so. I know it only gets worse for those in more populated areas. We did come close $4 during the Bush years, which wasn't fun.

In any event, my main concern is that we don't really have public transit options to fall back on. People are still going to have to work, and subsequently lose that much more per hour daily on their round trip. Trips elsewhere will be cut down, which will have a likely effect on shopping and dining. Plus we can simply expect freight costs to rise.

While I agree OPEC shouldn't just be halting production to artificially raise prices, taking it out on us doesn't really feel like the solution.

I drove for Lyft during a period in my life when I'd just left a job I hated and was trying to figure out what else to do.

That lasted until the first time I had to fill my gas tank and compared that cost to everything I'd made. Then I went back to DoJ.
