The point is that those centers got filled with kids when unaccompanied minors started applying for asylum en masse in 2014 and we had to put them somewhere while they were being processed. It sucks but at least they were in theory safe and sheltered and fed.

However, now children that AREN'T unaccompanied when applying for asylum, who are with their parents and cared for, are still being put into these centers away from their parents for no good reason other than to send a message that you'll be torn from your families if you try to flee violence to come here for asylum.

Some day adults need to have a conversation about what humane immigration enforcement looks like.

Our country is (rightfully) a popular immigration destination. Rather than making our country less attractive to central/southern Americans by gimping our social programs and having a major political party endorse white nationalism, and rather than totally abandoning tracking who is an American citizen, we should probably just fix our immigration system.
1) Our immigration system is based on quotas from the 1920s or something, which obviously don't reflect the current immigration demand. We should sort those out.
2) One reason people want to move here is because their governments are really shitty. Perhaps we should stop ignoring Central/South America. I'm not saying we have to go back to propping up strongmen, but if we responded to humanitarian crises in-country then we wouldn't have to respond to them in at our border.
3) All temporary residency programs should include a path to citizenship (even if it is set at a decade of residency when the program is only supposed to last for a year.)
4) We should accept refugees both because it's the right thing to do and for global PR reasons.

Border control is not our problem. We need border control. Our problem is that border patrol agents have to deal with the humanitarian crises that we failed to diplomatically diffuse before they got to our border and that legal immigration is difficult/impossible for the average immigrant.
