Can't speak for George W and Obama, but Clinton had a pretty shitty one. Marc Rich pretty much got his pardon due to his wife donating heavily to Clinton when he was hiding in Switzerland for Bank Fraud and Tax Evasion.

I'm happy for whomever that pardon still mattered to for finally getting it. Given the totality of circumstances surrounding Trump and his administration, it is difficult for me to view it as anything other than an eye-rollingly safe and token gesture engineered to do just what I said; give followers something to point at to demonstrate a lack of racism while avoiding actually freeing any wrongfully imprisoned black people since that would anger many of his followers who are racist.

i mean i've been mighty critical of the administration but the last thing you guys need is another dick in the circle jerk. and in this case someone literally asked when was the last time a pardon wasn't gotcha bullshit and it was literally the last pardon Trump gave. it doesn't seem to matter to you guys but it seemed to matter a hell of lot to Johnson's family, a hell of a lot to anyone who thinks governments and peoples and entities should admit wrong-doing even if the victims of it are beyond recompense, who value responsibility and think an intractable aspect of redemption is the assumption of guilt.

but i've actually been thinking about it the past few minutes and figure a big component you guys are so dismissive of it is because you aren't boxing fans. i am. people like Sylvester Stallone and John McCain and Ken Burns are and it's why they've pushed every president to pardon for decades. imagine it forges an emotional connection to the gross injustice done to one of boxing's greatest champions in a way you non-fight fan nerds don't exactly get.

but imagine if JRR Tolkien had fallen in love with an Indian girl and the British government had sentenced him to jail, forced him to stop writing mid-Lord of the Rings. no post-facto act could ever make it right, but as much as it could be made right it desperately needed to be.

I don't think people are arguing that the pardon was not a good thing, they're arguing that it was done for craven and selfish reasons and as such does not warrant praise for Trump.
